Gearing for 35s?

The gearing difference between 4.56 & 4.88 is about the same as the strength difference...small. Stock carriers will increase your chances of breaking a 4.88 gear set.

Mathmatically, 4.56 is correct for 35's. I believe the 4.0 accelerates better and gets better fuel mileage when it's allowed to stay in a gear longer and use it's torque...rather than zinging along like a ricer zipping through the gears (others will disagree...but I don't think they're being honest with themselves or you, as they obviously need more HP and are trying to compensate with overgearing).

I never blew up a tranny when I was forced to run 3.55's with 35" rubber for 6 months (blown up diffs, had the 3.55 stuff, do what you gotta do), I got great mileage on the highway running in 3rd, and it still wheeled all the hard trails my club did at the time.

Personally, I don't see enough pros to .32 more driveshaft revs/wheel revs vs. cons.

Adam probably needs to break down and let me set up his diffs:rtm:

I run 4.56's on my 4.0 auto with 33's, still could be deeper. All the armor we typically run makes these things heavy as ****.

Finally found the post I was referring to when I namedropped Bob. As usual it isn't quite what I remembered :dunce:

You guys crack me up:rolleyes:

Define "credible evidence"?

I'm telling you, as someone who does this shit for a living, who has set up hundreds of differentials, who doesn't take anything at face value, who has to always know "why", as someone who has repaired countless blown up differentials...4.88's are beating 4.56's in the blown-the-****-up department by 5:1...personal experience...not read on the inter-friggin-naxja-lemming-webby.

All you guys who don't believe me, and therefore feel the need to contradict my statements...how many 4.56 gears have you seen blown up vs. 4.88's? Personally? And have personally disassembled and evaluated for cause of failure? How many gear sets have you set up and stood behind with a warranty?

I see no "credible evidence" that 4.88's have a magic way to overcome mechanics and physics and suddenly make themselves as strong as 4.56's. Blowing smoke up my ass and saying that they're not weaker is like saying your engine won't really rev higher with 4.88's...pure bullshit.

It takes more than red names and post counts to know what the XXXX you're talking about :passgas:

Just my personal experience... I have had D30/4.88's on 33's for over ten years. I broke the carrier and lock-right about a year ago. Never had a problem with the gears. I wheel as hard of trails as I can with 33's. I am very easy with the skinny peddle.

I will soon be going to 35's. If everything blows up with the bigger rubber, I will report back...
