pick a date .
The 7th it is. I plan to start around 10AM at the latest. I want to get done early enough to enjoy some good grub, beer, and bs'ing. BTW bring your wives and young'uns maybe if my wife has someone to share her grief over my hobby with she won't give me such a hard time. If coming from LA or Orange county: coming down 15 south, exit at Rancho California Rd. turn left heading east, go to the 1st intersection which is Ynez RD, turn right, go to top of the hill and turn left onto Rancho Vista, go over two hills and look for Southern Cross Rd on the left, turn left and look for a huge palm tree straight ahead. The address is 30526 Southern Cross Rd. If you are coming from San Diego: exit Rancho Cal and turn right. Phone me if you get lost :dunce: (951)326-0645. John

O.K. More planning. I would like a heads up on who's gonna make it. I need to make sure we have enough food and stuff. Leep was gonna bring some organic Goat to grill, who else wants to bring some critter to burn? I can provide sodas and h2o. Beer is encouraged but not provided. This is more about wrenching and less about getting sloppy drunk. We're gonna need some burgers and dogs if that's what you guys wanna do, also buns, I have condiments.
Let's see, bring a beach chair if you have one, it will make it easier to see what's going on under the Jeep.
Is anyone good at photography? I would like to take plenty of pics for a good write up. Maybe a video? I have a digital camcorder.
Anybody have a dial indicating 0-50 inch pound torque wrench? I have a clicker but a dial indicating one is easier for this job.
If anyone thinks of anything else that would make this more fun and enjoyable speak up!

I think i will be in, depends on my dad's plans for the weekend because he wants to help. What kind of tools and supplies do we need to bring to do the work? also, would 2 axles be feasible for one day?

It would be good to see you there, I should be good for tools and such. I plan to do all the prep work and parts cleaning the night before so that we can get straight to installing the gears the next day. Only things we need are the food and drink, see previous thread.

byoo, right? (bring your own oil) I don't have a manual handy - i'm at work, do you know how much each axle takes?

I sorta misunderstood you. I'm planning to do both axles on my jeep. I don't expect to have time for another one. I could hook you up another time. Labor cost is $150 for just gears, $200 for total overhaul (not including brakes), you supply parts. It takes just under 2 qts.

The list is getting longer, let me see, Goat, maybe some pork, drinks, tools, chairs....hmmmm, did I forget anything. Ohhh, the wife to keep yours busy ?

Do you have a dial indicator for backlash ? I have a nice plate that can be bolted to the housing for a magnet for a dial indicator, that is what I used. Do you have a lift, mine is kinda bolted to the floor in my shop ?

Let me know if you need anything else.

its my understanding that everyone is going to learn how to set up gears by watching and listening to john. the most important thing about settting up gears is knowing when the backlash is set right, and that is something that you can only learn by being shown. at least thats how it was for me, i struggled for 3 weeks trying to get my gears setup right and finally i had someone show me and it took all of 20 mins to get everything fixed up, and the whole problem was slop in the gears. i dont think its a do your own gears party, that would take forever and need a big shop, which im not sure john has im thinking this is at his house? you would need to go harass rick for that he has plenty of space in there now that he cut all the sheetmetal off his XJ he can fold it up like a taco and stick it in the corner for awhile :D

Like mike sed, you can play the guessing game for a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG time unless you know what you are doing. I read until I was blue in the face and then started to do mine. I called on a friend and 20 minutes later the it was aligned and the BL was correct. I have ran 4 trips on my setup with no binding whining noises or breakage. I guess they are ok from this point.

See you there...

I'm in. Are there any pizza places that deliver to your place? Figure I'll buy a few pizzas to go along with the BBQ for those not so much into that.

Unfortunately I have no lift, the ceiling in my garage is too low. I have a dial indicator, that plate would be usefull though.

On the money Grimm, it's just a chance to see how it's done and ask questions. Most importantly it's a chance to share ideas and tips on how to make things go smooth. Everyone has different experiences and everyone can contribute to everyone else's knowledge.
