Gauge cluster swap

I just want to make sure, as not to pass up a cluster. I have a '94 XJ with idiot lamps and want a gauge cluster. '97-'01 clusters will not work, correct? I have to get a cluster from a '91-'96 ?

Correct, you need to match the era of your XJ. You'll also need to replace the water temp sender with a ranging sensor, and the oil pump sender as well. The senders for the idiot light cluster are simple contact/no-contact switches. The sensors for the gauge cluster are variable resistance devices.
