Gas tank location

I'm trying to decide weather or not to replace the stock tank with a smaller fuel cell.
The advantages of using the stock tank range from still having a fuel gauge, lower COG, plus there would be nothing to purchase!
On the other hand a fuel cell would be much lighter and I would have a one way valve to prevent leaking in a roll over.
I have seen many built rigs and there doesn't appear to be a consensus.
Although it will be street registered I don't intend to use it for any long distance driving so a smaller tank would work fine, maybe 10 gal.
Here is a picture of the rig as of this morning.

I'm getting ready to build the bumper and then go after the shock towers.
What do you all think?

I say stick with the stock tank untill you feel it is required for you to upgrade to continue your project.

I built a steel "fuel cell" that retains the Factory sending unit and pump. Mounts behind the seat in the rear "foot well". I didn't like the right behind the seat thing either but it keeps the weight as low as possible and in the middle of the Jeep. I had no real choice with the rear bobbed I took out more than where the tank used to hang.

I'm working on them, don't have a camera or the brain power to post if I did. I will most definitely be posting some pics once it's all completed. I have yet to see any pics of a bobbed XJ that retains the full tailgate. That part is done, just starting on the cage.

You live in CA..........meaning you have to get it smogged every two years. If you're going to change the fuel tank you'll need to use the stock pump and have a plan to keep it smog legal. Not worth the trouble in my view.

Let's see......not hardcore, not just a crawler rig, no exo cage or major body protection. But, how about a fuel cell to save a few pounds. :looser:

But the weight loss was only part of the deal, I'm a bit more concerned with the fuel spillage when I flop it over!!

Fuel spillage isn't an issue, or shouldn't be. You can get the fuel cell with a rollover valve, I think that's what most, if not all, of us do. Mine has one. Then, you can run the breather tube so it points down below the fuel cell, so if you rollover the top of the breather is higher than the cell. Race cars, desert trucks, and comp buggies run fuel cells...........supposedly because they're safer.

I rolled a Baja Bug and when the hood flew off it took the filler line with it.
Its amazing how fast a tank can empty itself with only a two inch opening!
But yeah, I know what you mean, overall the stock tank should do the trick...for now.

Check out WWW.Fuelsafe.com. I had a 22gal in Ranger pre-runner & it had fuel sending unit & check valve (see black fuel valve below) that closed on roll overs, I know I used it! Not cheep but what your looking for is out there & Fuel safe is about the best.

BTW the XJ is looking great!

My stock gas tank is ratched strapped in the back right now.

Not optimal on many levels, but functional nonetheless. It will work until I build the propane-powered stroker once I get everything dialed in where I want it.

I'm wondering if someone makes an in line one way valve.
Something I can add to the filler line on the stock tank........?

The right cap should be sufficient. There's two "roll over" valves in the top of the tank. The factory cap should not be vented.

I guess all I need to do is dump the tank on its side to check that!
Its sitting on the side of the garage.
