When i put gas in my XJ even if i don't fill it up it'll jump all the way to full and over about 10 minutes work it way down to all the way empty. Every now and then it'll jump back up to half a tank, but then it'll just start falling again. Any ideas?
Oh, it's a 98 2dr sport 4x4. Thanks

You need a new pump. There was a recall on them, but I think it was for the 97's--you should check with your local dealer to make sure when the recall was.

It is the sending unit on the pump, they had a recall on 97 model years, my 98 was built in sept of 97 and was not covered. It involves dropping the gas tank, pulling the pump and either replacing the whole assembly or just the sender. Figure $500+ to have it done. Other option is drive by your trip odometer, thats free, till your pump dies. Thats what I have been doing for 8 years.

hmm...mine does the opposite...when i fill it up it goes to "E" then as i drive, it slowly works its way back to "F"

damn Chrysler switched the polarity on the sending units and didnt tell me about it, swapped a 93 tank for my busted 90 tank

WOW. I need one of those. I could make $$ selling gas. All I would have to do is drive around.

My van was like that. I got really good at paying attention to the trip odometer, It was hard getting used to the Jeep not having one after I bought it.
