Gallons Per Hour

Incidentally, I don't want to hear one word about polluting from anyone who voted for W the last two elections. It's called The Kyoto treaty, and if you really want to keep the billions of tons of carbon from the atmosphere you would have voted for someone who would have prevented it.
Anyway, I drive a Cherokee, if the environment was that important to me I wouldn't drive a Jeep, I would be in a Civic....

I didn't vote for George W either time and I never would vote for anyone who dismisses the Kyoto Agreement out of hand.
I also drive a Cherokee but since I care for the environment so much, I tossed out my old 4.0 and replaced it with a cleaner-burning home-built 4.6 stroker. Civics (except for the Type R) are gay.
Can I have my beers now? ;)

Let me get this straight.....
Your rationalization for your selfish polluting is that your candidate lost?

Good one.

And man, you are one angry dude. You should really learn to take a deep breath once in awhile.

I mean, c'mon. Considering the topic of this thread, you had to know you would get some different responses.

Didn't you?

Sure, come on over. What do you drink? :)

No, my rationalization for my selfish polluting is that everyone else is doing it, I'm just jumping on the bandwagon (that was sarcasim if it went over your head). My canidate never ran in the first place.

And again I have no problem with getting lots of different reasponses. I could do without the "lets see if you can do the cals" bs.

I'm going to take a deep breath,......... of the pollution I'm causing (sarcasim as well). ;)

Well, I actually had the (inadvertant) opportunity to test this. Ran back into my studio for something after starting my Cherokee. Phone rang, sh!t happened and I was stuck in the studio for over 4 hours. Totaly forgot the Cherokee was idling away.

I went through less than 1/4 tank. I was actually suprised at how little gas I used. I estimate maybe 3 gallons max.

I assume you get to work 10 to 15 minutes early but can't clock in early? Anyway, I heard once that for every minute sitting in traffic, the average car with an automatic will burn the equivalent of approximately 1/2 mile at cruising speed. I assume that by specifying automatic transmission they are including the energy lost through the touque coverter slipping while "sitting in traffic." I'll assume minimal difference and just go with the 1/2 mile/minute equivalent.

At 1/2 mile/minute, in 15 minutes you would conceivably burn the cruise equivalent of 7.5 miles. My stocker on 235s gets 18 mpg at 60 mph. Thats 60/18=3.33 gph. At 60 mph (1 mile per minute) 7.5 miles is 7.5/60=0.125 hour. So, in 15 minutes of idle you will burn the equivalent of 1/8th hour of cruising or 3.33gph*0.125h=0.41625 gallon. If you have a 20 gallon tank, burning 0.41625 gallon every 15 minutes, or 0.4165*4=1.665 gallons each hour, you could idle for approximately 12 hours. Conversely, at 15 minutes of idle each day you will burn one tank of fuel every 48 days.

You'd probably get a bit better than that because you are idling in neutral whereas this model includes the loss of the slipping torque converter. If you give yourself 50 days, at 5 days a week that's 10 weeks to burn 20 gallons. If a Chicago winter is what, 17 weeks long (Nov-Feb), you will burn 30 gallons this winter to keep your toes warm.

I know I'd do it if I worked in Chicago and my employer wouldn't open the door for me.

Hey, Doc. We both hit 0.41625 gallon per 1/4hour. Dang! This cipherin' is fun! :laugh3:

1. It's the Kyoto Protocol, not the Kyoto treaty
2. It's sarcasm, not sarcasim
3. It's candidate, not canidate
4. Internal combustion is not hyphenated
5. You state that "the environment would still be ruined in the coming decades. Not by me or you, but the whole planet acting together" and then go on to say "I guess I'm still just part of the problem, just like every one of you."

Just what books are you reading while you're sitting there wasting gas? Try some with fewer pictures, and more BIG words. Maybe a dictionary would be a good start.

When you give attitude, expect to get it back. It seems the general opinion is extended idling is bad. I don't see anyone else taking your side. "We" are not all part of the problem. People who act with selfish interests (Wahh, my toes are cold) are the problem. Move on.

Heineken. Refreshes the parts other beers cannot reach.

Good idea but I still think mine's better since obesity's a major health problem in the USA (people eating too many calories and doing little or no exercise).

"Spend that time doing some exercises in your home. A few push ups, sit ups, and squats will get your circulation going and warm the parts that'll otherwise freeze when you step outside. You'll burn some calories, lose some excess weight (if you have any), feel healthier, your wallet will thank you, you'll save wear and tear on your engine, and the world will thank you for not polluting the atmosphere."

I also have a better idea for keeping your toes warm. WEAR THICKER SOCKS!

Thanks. I'll admit spelling is not my forte, thank god for spell check, which I clearly didn’t use on that post.

It is the Kyoto Protocol climate treaty, but it is referred to, in short, as the Kyoto treaty by The BBC, NPR, CNN, FOX, The NY Times, The Washington Post, and many others, to name a few. Protocol would be the protocol the signatories have to follow in order not to violate the treaty they signed. But thanks for the clarification.

So by your logic "When you give attitude, expect to get it back." I get to give it back when someone gives it to me?

I don't really care if anyone else takes my side, I'm not putting a team together. However I'd say a good half of the posts, at the very least were indifferent, and provided a simple answer.

And I agree, people acting with selfish interests, are the problem.

So it seems like about a gallon and half an hour? Thanks for the answer Dr Dyno and XJ Dreamin'.

1.665. I like decimals :laugh3:

Glad to help. Idle on.
