Fuel System Cleaner

on my 2000 XJ 4.0 sometimes (rarely) it will idle rough, i'll rev the engine and it goes away for a long time. I recently changed the spark plugs, cleaned the throttle body and the air filter has been changed to a clean k&N.
What i want to know (since this year XJ has the fuel filter in the gas tank and is esentually unservasable) what happens if i use the fuel system cleaner? The gunk that it will pick up from the gas tank will go directly into the filter and clog it, correct? Will it make it past the filter and burn off in the engine? has anyone ever had problems with using fuel system cleaner?

I use Chevron techron, 20gallon sized bottle, FUEL SYSTEM CLEANER NOT Fuel injector cleaner. I also use Valvoline synthetic fuel system cleaner and SeaFoam, all work well.

I use BG44K, In my experience, nothing else comes close. Lucas comes the closest.

As a Napa employee, I sell tons of that fuel system additive. the only two that i have ever had people comment on are the SeaFoam and the the Lucas. I sell probably 10 to 1 lucas over any other additive.

But then again, if i ever come across the bg44k stuff, i'll give it a try. Never seen the Old Man steer someone in the wrong direction.

I look at the fuel injection cleaner as preventive maintainence. I put in a bottle of lucas every oil change on my delivery vehicles (3000 miles). That may be to often, but we depend on these trucks to last and be reliable for 250,000 miles. I can't think of a much tougher enviroment for a vehicle. They see multiple drivers, mostly hard city driving, with probably 35 starts a day. In all the weather southern indiana can stir up.
