Hello everbody. My fuel pump has gon bad on my 96 xj. Has anyone had theirs go bad,and if so how hard of a job is it to fix. I found the unit at napa for 154.00

Any and all help is apreciated...in fact if you want to do some wrenchin..

Not that hard to change, depending on how rusty your undercarriage is. You don't necessarily have to drop the tank to do it, but it's easier if you do. If it's rusty, I'd get a new set of tank straps and cut the old ones off (that's what I did) so you don't have to undo the long bolts on the tank straps. A racheting box end wrench will come in handy, or a really really deep socket! for dealing with the tank strap bolts

If you replace it without dropping the tank, just use a screwdriver and mallet to unscrew the retainer, and after it's disconnected, pull it out. I'd recommend replacing the rubber hoses and hose clamps that go to the pump while you're at it.

One safety tip - you're working with a GAS tank. Even if you think you have drained it completely - there are still fumes present. It would be highly advisable to use a BRASS rod and rubber mallet to loosen the retainer ring. A steel screwdriver could spark and then . . . :explosion.

Granted, it's not very likely, but, why take the chance?
