I have a factory front skid plate for my 90xj that i want to put on my jeep, but i dont know what size or type of bolts i need to attach it. Do any of you now what bolts i need to attack the skid?

thanks,
Curtiss

Well, you coud go with what fits through the holes. On the front of the skid, I seem to think that they will fit a 3/8 " bolt.

Now, normally, you install them with nutserts (do a search), but I don't see any reason why you can not just run the bolts through the holes in both the skid and front attachment strip.

The three studs that hold the front of the skid are 8mm.

The ones at the junk yards I've looked at had nutserts installed for these studs. The holes in my 91 where made in such a way that I think they where intended for self tapping 8mm studs. Of course I could be wrong.

I just drilled them out and used the 8mm studs with nutserts.

I seem to recall that the front studs for the front skid are self tapping at one end, with regular threads on the other. Obviously the self tapping end screws into the holes along the front cross member.

If you can't find the self tapping studs, just drill out the holes slightly (as previously posted) and just use nuts/bolts to secure the front of the skid down, or tap the existing holes and use the appropriate sized bolt, or you can just use self tapping bolts to secure the front of the skid down...

I pulled out the installaiton instructions for my 88 XJ's front skid plate. I'll give you the part numbers and quanity so you can ask the dealer parts guys for the right thing

1 8220 0613 Front Skid Plate Assy
3 3420 1575 Nutsert
3 3420 2209 Stud
3 J420 0046 Nut
3 3420 1540 Screw and washer

For the front skid plate installing a nutsert is do-able. Just insert it into the hole, place a vice grip on the back then tighten down with a bolt and washer. It does a pretty good job. That how I did it on my 88 XJ.

When you go to the dealer you will want to get the nutsert, stud and nut - three of each. The Screw and washer listed is the bolts which go into the frame. They are like 12 mm diameter bolts.
