Front end POP = emmissions cannister?

I made the mistake of posting this somewhere else...I should of know the answers await me here...pls help.

"Both my XJ's make this noise. The noise is kind of like when you take the top of a tobacco or tin can lid and flex it in and out. It only comes from the passenger's side, high up it seems, near the shock(?) and I only notice it when at slow speed and on rough/pot holed road. I thought it was the track bar but that's now ruled out.

Components I have replaced in the last several weeks on the 1990 include: trackbar/mount; tie rod; discos; springs; shocks; ucas; and lcas. Also, both axle ujoints were replaced just last year...way different sound...no where near as scary.

Everything is torqued to spec, I do notice still a bit of play with the frame mount to the ucas, maybe this is normal, regardless the same pop was there before. Engine and tranny mounts appear fine. Ball joints seem okay (no wiggle up or down to the wheel).

I can only think of a couple things. 1) someone once mentioned a noise coming from the emmissions cannister(?) on the passenger side??? 2) the steering dampner(sp?) is the original, if that's toast could it make similar noises?

I am at a loss, what else is there to check?

TIA"

Sounds like it could be the coil spring hitting the bumpstop. However, I don't know how much lift you have or what arms you're running on both of your rigs, but I'd look for that.

I have a similar sound,it is the floor under the driver,s feet."OIL CANNING" is the term used to discribe it.
It started when we installed the rock rails that tied the frame rail and pinch seam together.measurements may have been a little off ? Also my XJ was wrecked before I got it.
