Anyone heard of it?

Sounds fishy to me. Too good to be true. I can't see how it's legal.

A few of the guys at work have it and love it. They've haven't had any trouble at all. Not sure what all channels they get but, I know it's alot. I'll get the details later this week from them.
As of now, I don't really know the last thing about it. Anybody know what this "FTA" is all about?

its only legal if you tell the satellite company that you have a box that can recieve all channels, and pay accordingly. and yes, its a sheetload of channels, and PPV :gag:
 
By FCC rules, if someone broadcasts something in the clear, you have the right to recieve it.

Most of the content on C and Ku band was free, however, much of the content went from analog to digital format and you had to buy a decoder box. If you wanted pay programing (scrambled), you could buy that also as there are companies that cater to the folks with their own systems.

I got rid of my dish a few years ago. It was too confusing for the Wife to figure out what program was on what Sat at what time.

I converted to a DirecTV system and the Wife couldn't be happier. That's what counts, right ;)

Looks like there is a billion different recievers to choose from. What's good? What's bad?

dunno if this is the place to discuss something like this ;), but i use a viewsat extreme, picked it up for $100 on ebay. i like it, but i havent had experience with any others. you need a dish, a switch port that goes on the dish, 2 LMBs (the recievers for the dish that point at the face of it) and a place to get the keys and bin files to flash the box when the company resets the codes. check out www.totalfta.com and dig around a bit in there.

It is widely used in Europe, fta is also used for some internet. No joke, just that here in the states, it isn't as common. Usually its pay tuning.

is an excellent resource for channel listings, locations etc. This is the page I use to tune mine in. As far as equipment, choose the one that meets your needs, channels you want and cost. I use a standard triple LNB direct tv oval dish, hooked to a pc atsc satellite card (european AIR2PC/SAT2PC) card. It also recieves north america HDTV over the air signals.
Signal is ok to good most of the time, channel choice is spotty at best. Roughly 200 some odd channels. Some real funny stuff.
You get what you pay for.....free.

So, in other words, completely fucking worthless.

My dish network is $50 a month and that's with 2 dvrs and 2 regular receivers for a total of 4 tvs on different channels and we get a pretty good selection of channels. Picture is crystal clear ALWAYS and rarely goes out even in the worst storms. Plus, they never scramble the channels and if something does go wrong I just call my local guy and he comes the same day and does all the work for free.

I think I'll keep it.
 
I run a CNX Mini and love it. cheapest I've found is phatsatellite.com. ConaxSat also has the Duo and Trio with PVR/DVR capabilities. ConaxSat is great, reliable, with updates you can perform on your own using a USM thumbdrive. You dont have to take it anywhere to get it programmed.

I was foreign to it all as well but now that I'm in it...I'm not leaving it or getting rid of it anytime soon.
 
I have been staying out of this for obvious reasons.

BUT


All I will say is, if you are getting something other then FTA, you should be REAL careful about what you are doing.

Signal quality and strength? Yeah, my dish network gets perfect picture, HD channels are amazing, I am also happy with it and am keeping it.
FTA DVB is more of a hobby in the states for a long time to come. Wait until the analog stations turn off, and digital takes over. FTA.
And once again, Free To Air, is FREE, You get what you pay for. Free.
It is a fun hobby to mess with, some of the latin and overseas content is funny.
I wouldn't say completely fucking worthless.
