PIUTE MOUNTAINS FOREST ORDER IN EFFECT

LAKE ISABELLA, CA ... Sequoia National Forest Supervisor Tina
Terrell has issued a Forest Order prohibiting the
possession of or using a motor vehicle off national Forest
System roads within the Piute area. Forest order 09-04 has
been put into place to prevent resource damage in the Piute
area. This Forest Order will remain in effect through May
1, 2010. The boundary of the Piute Area covered under this
order incorporates the Piute Fire within the Sequoia
National Forest. The closure area is identical to the
closure instituted last fall immediately to the fire. The
area was open back up to Off Highway Vehicle (OHV) use upon
termination of the previous order. Monitoring and
re-evaluation of conditions has shown that additional
protection and mitigation measures are necessary to protect
the resource.

All motor vehicles, including OHV‚s are restricted to roads
only. Some roads may also be closed in the area if
excessive resource damage exists or they are deemed unsafe
for public use.

The exemptions to this order are: land owners or lessees of
private land within the Piute area to the extent to gain
access to their land, persons who reside on private land
within the Piute area to the extent necessary to gain
access to their residences, and any federal, state, or
member of an organized rescue or firefighting force, in the
performance of an official duty.

For more information on the Forest Order please call the
Lake Isabella Visitor Center at (760) 379-5646 or the
Kernville Ranger Station at (760) 376-3781.

I don't know what kind of damage all the variuos offroad vehicles are doing to the piute forest, but here in the san bernardino national forest there out of control. while deer hunting last year i saw motorcycles and atv's back in areas where they were not permitted.and it wasn't just a isolated case it was everywhere i went, including BLM land..they have no regard for anybody or anything.this is why area's are being closed. the forestry and BLM say they have no budget to control this, so they just close area's off.they need to man there land with officers and start fining and confiscating there vehicles and offroad vehicles and this would stop. also users of the land need to learn to respect what we have.and yes i wheel and yes i obey the rules..

It is easier and cheaper for the agencies involved (FS, BLM, etc) to simply close land to any type of motorized usage than it is for them to do anything else.

Did you know that there is a coalition of former FS, BLM, and Park Rangers that are organized against OHVer's? Check them out:

Be sure to read their comments. Comments like this one made by Bob Krumm, retired BLM Range and District Manager and Deputy Director, Idaho:
Irresponsible off-road use of public land is encouraged by off-road manufacturers and dealers. Although they loudly advertise that they support "tread lightly", thoughtful riding and trail stewardship, their TV ads and colorful brochures stress the ability of their off-road machines to tear up streams and wet meadows and easily surmount steep, boulder strewn hills. Most off-road user groups claim to teach ethical, responsible, lawful riding, but, on the other hand, routinely fight against or ignore off-road restrictions and closures. It's time to promulgate and enforce regulations to stop off-road abuse to the public lands. In addition, a program must be designed that will convince manufactures, dealers and user groups that it is vital to their interests to join the protection effort in earnest.

I firmly believe that the majority of employees wouldn't shed a tear if all off road use was banned. After all, it would make their job easier....

Liberal Green Planet People (I think they are from a galaxy far far away :P). I think that they do what they can to enforce the illegal stuff right now, only they are using the "extreme" to further another agenda that they have. That is seen by the last comment of them not sheding a tear if off roading was banned. I am sure they wont shed a tear if fishing, hunting, hiking, etc was banned either as the environment is their "God." They have already on another front in the dirt bike and atv industry been attacking the youth bikes due to them being classified as "toys" in California. They are banned cause they contain "lead." What better way slowly get rid of something over time than to remove the youth!?! If they want to get rid of the problem than enforcement of the rules is the only fair way, not to punish those who abide by the rules and want to enjoy the earth we live on! That is not the objective though from the big scheme of things, that can even be seen on a much bigger scale of our government and even the world.

I obey the rules too but I am not blind to the agenda each group has. I have seen the horseback riders not want the mtn bikers on the trail, the motorcycles not want the 4x4's on the trail, the hikers not want anyone but hikers on the trail, and the gubmint want to close the trail to everyone. I think there is enough room for all of us and I believe all the forest, beaches, desert, and mountains should be open to all the public. My .02.
