For Those of You Who Built Strokers

I get angry when I hear that everyone and their mom works at a machine shopp and got x for free. They dont have that kind of equipment in my accounting classes, so I had to pay out the bootie to know it was done right.

Well if it makes you feel better that was all I got done for free, and my boss did it as a test run, and the risk of screwing up a head I had already ported and polished. The bore and hone machine at the race show was down for maintenance, and the EPA made them get rid of the Lye tank because they did not have a permit. I am still trying to get some of the roller rockers they had laying around for a BBC because I have heard a few rumors that they will work on a 4.0 head, but with no confirmation.

Make friends with people who race cars?

Talyn- That thread in your sig is pure Jeep Porn!!!!
But yea you are right, i probably wont be spending near that amount of money on mine.
Is there anything you wish you did differently?

1) I could have purchased the pistons at a later date. When I purchased the .030" over pistons, they were significantly cheaper (IIRC $200) than the .040" and .060" over pistons. Now they ate the same price. I probably wouldn't have gone with the .060" over as I would like to have room for at least one extra over bore.
2) I would have liked to have gathered several sets of connecting rods and pick the most closely matched length wise rods.
3) maybe gone with a completely custom piston.
4) Maybe done some grinding work on the crank

That is all realistically.

Now, if I had more money to throw into it (like I didn't throw enough into it already) I would like to have gone with forged rods, either the Eagles, or offset grind the crank with a smaller journal and run a perhaps a chevy rod, or custom. But we are talking big bucks with that. And if I still had money burning a hole in my pocket I would replace the timing chain with a belt setup and send the head to Harland Sharp for a shaft rocker setup. One thing I would really like to have done is gone with a roller cam shaft. There is one on the market but the verdict is still out on it.

Also, I would have also liked to tried some heat berried coatings on parts suck as the combustion chamber, the piston dish, the valves, etc. Maybe some oil shedding coating on the block itself.

Here's the cost breadown of my stroker. I collected parts for 18 months before putting anything together.

Yours can be reasonably priced too if you pay less than 10 dollars for a crank and rods. It was my experience that the price of most stuff has gone up since then, although it is still reasonable to put in minimum money and still have a running engine.

usually, if you can find one out of a running truck with no pressure issues, then check the bearings. If there is no wear on the bearings you could probably get away with swapping it if you had to.

Yeah, I was able to pick up a running 4.2L out of an 85 Cj off eBay for $5.50. I put in new bearings and checked all the clearances with plastiguage. All of the bearing clearances were within specs.
