Okay the wife and I are in a discussion about how to finish the edge of the hearth on our fireplace.

Here's an over all view of the Fireplace.

The light grey will be tiled, and what is wood will be covered in a dark oak.

The problem we are having is weather to have the tile on the top of the hearth come over the top edge of the wood.

Or to have the wood come up to the edge of the tile and be flush to the top of the tiles.

Now keep in mind the wood in the photos is just a rough piece of plywood, the wood used in the end will be a good oak. Rounded on the edge if the wood goes up to flush with the tiles. Also the wood will go all the way down to the floor instead of just being a strip across the hearth.

I don't have a photo for, but it would be to use some type of corner trim. That would go over the wood. It would also go farther back on the top and be flush with the tops of the tiles.

Thanks

Nothing combustable on top. Go with all ceramic until you start the vertical surface. Ohh...go dark also...trust me.

Thought about that, it's a gas fire place. Either way I'll be well beyond the minimum distance to combustibles. Also, since it's gas, I don't think that there is going to be too much staining of the tiles to worry about.?!

Non of the above.
Use hearthstone. Available from any masonry supply house.

Err well yea, this is western Kansas. We're lucky to have a Home Depot. BTW the depot shows nothing when I search for hearthstone.

Is there any reason you can't tile the vertical surfaces too. I think having the tile as facing would look good.
