February gear install class.

Sounds like I'll be bringing that 2wd AX15 and the 2wd front axle to you on the 4th of February John.

I'll be there to watch and maybe learn something new, maybe help some, and possibly heckle and tell people they're doing it all wrong. :D

Probably show up, observe, ask dumb questions, get hands dirty, get hands slapped and told just to watch.

Just a reminder to all bringing axles. I like'em removed, clean and drained *NOT* dissembled! The reasons for this are many (bearing cap mixups, original shim sizes and locations, etc...). Gears can be setup while on the rig but will require a lift and much more muscle to do (but hey your the guys suppling the muscle!). Axles removed are much easier to do because gravity is in our favor and better access to the housing. The easier the install the better the final outcome has been my experience. Remember your consumables (gloves, oil, spray on cleaners, rags, etc...) John may have'em but be safe and bring some. Oh, and I have Feb. 4th on my calender. Plan on a long day! So show up early, sober (at least to start) and well rested. See ya there! -jim

is there an actually a start time to this or is it just show up when you feel like it and leave when your drunk er....done :)

Now by "*NOT*disassembled" Is it ok to have the axle shafts and knuckles removed from my front D30? Lighter :) How about rear shafts?

8am brutual:), but I will be there on time.

Hans

Just double checking. This is ONLY one day?

If I get off work, I will be struggling to get there my noon.

But I am only absorbing this time.

Yes, pull all shafts, knuckles, etc. Just do not pull the carrier, shims and carrier bearing caps.

John

top!

just to clarify - i will be attending this - my friend is coming also, and we're bringing his axles with us in my rig - mine will still be attached so hopefully that's not a problem.

perhaps i should take this to PM, but i will need master install kits for a D30/D35 and a D30 open carrier.

so i will bring:

self
rig
buddy
buddy's axles
gears
pizza money
???

anything i am forgetting?

looking forward to this.

This sucks, I am buying a Dana 44 rear for my 1994 XJ and I want to put 4.10 gears in it, but I'm in Iraq. Anyway I can get any help/advice later on to accomplish this? I plan on buying the axle while here in Iraq and shipping it to my brother to have him take it to a shop to complete the gearing and locker install.

I just want to freshen up this thread with a dose of reality here. You guys have to remember that this started out as Jimbar offering to help a couple of guys setup gears in their driveway, and has now progressed into this "class". I offered to host it to keep you guys out of the rain and offer some better equipment. I just want to make sure everyone is aware that this is an INFORMAL EVENT, it's a couple of guys helping out a few other guys with their favorite hobby. Jim knows how to set up gears, but is not as proficient as someone who does this everyday for a living so it's a little more time consuming. (No offense, Jim) With the # of guys we have showing up for this, NOT EVERYBODY'S INSTALL MAY GO AS SMOOTHLY AS PLANNED AND THERE IS THE POSSIBILITY THAT SOME MAY NOT GET COMPLETED. I am not trying to drag everybody's enthusiasm down, just wanted to get this out. I know it's going to be a LONG LONG day, but I DO have a family and would like to get out of there by 7 or 8pm at the latest.

John

So would it be safe to say that work ceases at 5:30 PM?

Pretty short notice but, it seems like we should consider moving this to a different location?

While I am sure many of us can deal with the short notice, maybe some folks can scale back the bringing of their axles and simply observe? I understand John's concern about it running too late, and only having a handful of folks to 'help' could get rather chaotic. I know how one very experienced guy can work on two axles and get them done in 5-6 hours, so I can't imagine what a dozen guys who have never done it before could get done in 8. Hell, sometimes things don't go smoothly for the guy who has been doing it for 20 years...and he's gotta call the customer and say it just isn't getting done today. It happens because not everything is the same.

I'd almost say that if you're just bringing your axle to bring it, consider just coming to 'learn' on someone else's rig/axle and then going home to do your own, because after all...that's what started this whole thing.

I'm tickled at the enthusiasm though. ;)

Why? IMHO John has a pretty decent sized shop. If most people have their axles pulled it shouldn't be a problem. Having enough room isn't the problem. It is time. May be a few people should bring saw horses along that we can work on, I think John has only two axle stands. I am bringing a stand for my axles.

I have my axles fully CLEANED with axles shafts, brakes, and knuckles removed so that I can start regearing the second I get there. And I think most should follow suit. Also those who are doing gears should read and reread the install manuel that comes with the gears so that this can go as smoothly as possible.

And a huge thanks again to John and Jimbar.

Hans

John and Jimbar, I don't think this will get out of hand and your efforts *are* appreciated.

John's post just seemed as if he's uncomfortable and I wanted to get us working on a plan "B", if things aren't going to work out for him.

We will work this out.

Hans - you're coming from Lynden....you had BETTER be bringing your gears with that effort! :D

It's funny... GI John is reading my mind again... Headcount will determine the degree of Clusterf*ck potential
