Fan shrouds.

I have an 89 straight 6 and am missing my belt driven fan shroud,
My local U-Pull-It has an unknown year V6 that still has a decent shroud.

Anyone know if there interchangeable?

That's my line of thought, with out shroud, I must be running hotter, nothing to funnel the air through......

Running without a shroud will always raise the temp.

Due to the XJs design, with a small fan and 1/2 size shroud, the observed difference at the gauge will be small.

However, in what is at best a marginal cooling system, disabling the smallest component is, well, asking for trouble.

I suspect that a shroud from any XJ with an 4.0L will work.

V6, no. The V6's had a different radiator and fan shroud.

The ZJ 4.0 has a completely different fan and shroud. The 4.0 XJ's from 87-02 I believe are the same. I am sure 87-96 is the same.

The XJ fans aren't funnel shaped but instead are large flat blocks with a hole in the middle for the fan blades. Air builds up pressure in the corners and that is the last air that flows through those pockets. It's about as helpful as a piece of plywood with two holes in it would be.

I ran without the shroud for a week or so, but I got tired of losing fingers when I opened the hood with the engine running..

So I'm confused... the consensus is that it is BETTER to HAVE a fan shroud?

Yes it is better to have the fan shroud. It will remove more heat with the shroud. That does not mean you will see difference in the dash gauge reading. Exact conditions are hard to reproduce, and the gauge temp is pretty stable most of the time.

Since there are 2 fans on an XJ with a cut in switch thermostat that activates the electric fan, it is hard to see and measure the help that the fan shroud on the first fan offers.

They might help when stopped in traffic, since not having the shroud would allow air from under the bumper/engine whereas the shroud mostly covers the fan blades. Driving down the road, the air will be forced through the radiator either way but will probably be forced through more of the radiator with the shroud off since most of the shroud is just flat dead space. The biggest benefit is that you don't risk putting your fingers into the fan.

Ecomike & ehall - My thermal switch does not work to turn on my E-fan (looked in to that last week) but it DOES turn on when I engage the AC - so when in traffic I just turn on the AC to add the extra fan - it makes quite a difference in my '89

And yes just as soon as I can maintain 35+ MPH I notice the temp start to drop, so thanks everyone, I'll pass on the used fan from the V6 because I just cant find if it will fit a straight 6 or not and just sped the extra $10 and order a new one from 4wd.

.

I would add a switch for that Aux fan too... Yes turning on your AC engages it, but it also puts more strain on the engine. Counteracting most of the cooling ability.
