factory dent in exhaust pipe

I noticed on my '99XJ/4.0L/AW4 that the factory exhaust downpipe has a dent in it a few inches after the header. The dent looks like a factory design, presumably to give a bit more clearance for the front driveshaft yoke. The reason I was checking this out was because on my '95 XJ I had bumpstop failure and the front axle tore apart the exhaust in this area. It ripped a hole here, but I thought it also made this dent in the pipe until I compared it to my '99. So my question is, to anyone who has had a new exhaust installed on their XJ, did the replacement exhaust have a dent in it just after the header?

All XJ OEM downpipes have the dent.

If you are lifted enough and using bump stops you don't need the dent.

That said, any muffler shop replacing the downpipe can put the dent in it.

I was under my 97 today finishing the lift...same flipping dent just under the header. It appears to be a factory dent.

just admit that you're wrong, it's not that hard.

I'm not sure the 00 and 01 XJs (low pinion d30) had the dent, but every other XJ I have ever seen had the dent there.

I think it is in different places depending on the year or header.
My 98 has it in the same location as the pic. My 92 has it in a different location.
The 98 dent clears the pumpkin as opposed to the DL/U joints. Thought I had pics but they are at home.

if i could show the pic of mine and all the ones i see at pick a part which theres 10-15 xjs there the dents all are where mine is and not there but what ever i really dont care if it truely is or isnt. if you only saw all the ones ive seen youd know why i thought what i said but hey im wrong im wrong no big deal.

Aftermarket downpipe, no dent. I was told this would happen, and sure enough, when the front shaft comes up, and it runs out of clearance, it makes room.

The dent is where it is, for a reason.

Ha Ha! I just bought a 98 sport and was looking underneath and saw this dent. I thought wow, how did that get there? So I was going to take it to the muffler shop, but after reading these posts and more at another site, I guess it is normal???

Yep, normal.

Both of my 2WD 98 and 93 XJs have the dent (although in very slightly different locations).

Both pipes look as though they've been bashed by a big ball-peen hammer and they look
very restrictive for exhaust gas flow.

I can see no reason for them on a 2WD, but then I suppose I can be wrong about this.
