Experience w/ Motorola Razor on Verizon

I took my friend down to the Verizon store last Friday so he could get a new plan. He wanted a razor, of course, but they guy talked him into getting something else. His reasons: the batter life for the razor isn't as good as most of Verizons other phones and it doesn't get great reception, either (and that's a Verizon representative talking). So my friend ended up getting something else that he is happy with. Anyway... that's all I know about razors. But I have Verizon, and where I live (in a dense forest area), Verizon is the only service that gets reception at my house and in most parts of my town. So, depending on where you are and what your circumstances are, I would say Verizon is most likely the best bet reception wise. Services like Cingular and Nextel do not get service AT ALL around here, but then again, that just might be specific to around here. I've never ahd a problem with Verizon and they seem perfectly reliable.

this may be off just a tad...ive got a razr from cingular, the only phones i will own are motorola phones, but anyway, im not sure what the differences are between cingular and verizon phones, but anyway, i am on my 4th razr, motorola had a recall on them, and this phone is absolutely perfect, i have had it for 3 months, and 0 dropped calls, it doesnt cut in and out, and the battery lasts about 4 days between charges, depending on how much you talk and whatever.....just my input, which may be completely unrelated, but there it is anyway...lol

I looked at the razr and the moto E815, got the moto E815.
Both have bluetooth
Both have cameras, E815 you can store photos on a memory card that you can remove and plug into a card reader, not so on the razr, however the razr's have obex enabled so you can use bluetooth to transfer files between the phone and a PC once you put a USB dongle on the pc with the widcom drivers [don't use the MS drivers, they don't work, MS on it's own BT path, so typical]
I had some other requirements, one is it had to have a hardwired hands free car kit and hangup cup and external antenna, E815 YES, Razr NO. That would change now as you can get a Jensen am/fm/cd head unit with bluetooth so your phone calls go thru your stereo system. Yes, I also have the Jensen head unit.
The E815 and the Razr both have had problems, some of the 815's failed pretty quick, short battery life, 100% killed in 45 minutes of talking, dropped calls, some other issues, I have not experienced them myself, my 815 has been good so far.
I've had samsung, audiovox, LG and the moto's have always been the best, I wish they still made the startac w/bluetooth, that startac was a sweet phone. I don't like the color displays, they suck outside in the daylight. My buddy has a Mercedes branded startac in his SLK, factory installed in the center console, uses LCD's but only black screen with green or red characters, works in broad daylight with the top down.
The razr is a cool looking phone though, just overpriced....they have another one coming out, sliver or slvr, something like that that also looks sweet but all these phones are targeted at teenage girls not road warriors...

In order to keep a 'phone, it must be more useful to me than as just an "electronic leash." I get them for my convenience, not everyone else's.

The Motorola Razr just doesn't appeal to me, and I'm no slave to fashion (everyone at school seems to have them.)

What do I have? Treo 600 on T-Mobile. I like it because it effectly replaces my Handpring Visor Prism, combining a 'phone with it, and the camera (that's not why I got it, but it's handy) isn't too bad. It also doubles as an MP3 player, I'm already familiar with PalmOS, and my bigger digital camera uses the same SecureDigital memory cards - so I already had those.

The Treo 600 replaces a Treo 270 that I killed - it fell out of my pocket in a parking lot and exploded. Nice features came with the upgrade, but I do miss the "flip phone" - and having the mike somewhere near my mouth, rather than up by my ear...

Don't know much about Verizon service, but the foregoing is just my $0.02 (less, considering inflation...)

Yeah, that's what my friend got.. the E815, and he loves it. Anyway... yeah.

The E815 is hackable, all it takes is a usb to phone cable and some software tools, you can hack it to enable full bluetooth functionality.
One trick, before hacking, to get free ringtones on it is to get the memory card, record a bunch of 30 second 'music' 'sound bytes' etc, rip them to mpg files, transfer them to the memory card on the pc, put memory card in phone, send message to bogus phone number with mpg file attached [or in a no service area], one mpg per message, when it fails you get the option of 'saving' the attached mpg, one of the saving options is as a ringtone, bingo, done...free ringtone. My favorite one and a meeting stopper is 'fire' by arthur brown...
when that baby goes off 'I am the god of hellfire and I bring you FIRE':firedevil , then 'amazing grace' by bag pipes gets me second looks too...
The fire one means one of my sun servers is having problems, amazing grace means one just crashed, it's amazing how quick the IT people [windows types] picked up on that, they hear either one and everybodys making a beeline to the server room to see whats up... Did I mention the E815 is one heck of a speaker phone....

This is an excellent point - I just replaced my phone (had a credit coming to me from renewing my contract, and decided to use it), and selected the Motorola V325.

One reason I never even considered the razr is that the ones I saw at my local V-store were all-digital. I selected a tri-mode phone because I want to be able to use the old analog (AMPS) system if I'm out in the fringe where there's still no digital service.

Unfortuantely, phones that have analog capability are disappearing faster than the analog-only coverage areas. Up here in NJ it's not so much of a problem, but there are still plenty of places where digital can't cut it alone.

Rich P,
You can hack the E815 to use Blue Tooth? Now I am interested. I have thought the blue tooth would be nice.

Yup, two seem edits and then upload it to the phone, enables obex. The razrs already have it enabled. The normal BT works on the 815, basic BT profile for headsets and such but they crippled the other features so you are forced to use their pay services for things like ringtones and such..

Thanks for all the help guys and gals. I think I am going to go with the v325. However we may get the Pink Razor for my wife. We'll see.
I've got Verizon's Razr and couldn't be more happy with it. I figured I would bust it the first day I had it it looked so fragile but it holds up hella well. My reception is better than it's ever been with any other Verizon phone. I'm also very happy with their overall coverage, there are places where my brother on Cingular will have no reception and my phone will have 4 bars.

That's classic, amazing grace when a server fails...

I prefer straight razors, myself. Electrics just pull hair out by the handful, and I can go through two blades a week on a cartridge, easy.

RichP - know anything fun about the Treo 600, just out of curiousity?

Only that the people who have them in at work seem to be happy with them. I just choke on the price and shudder at the beating one would take on my belt as I work my way around and under desks, thru wiring closets, behind server racks and such and thats just at work... when I spent $150 on my E815 I considered it splurging and hiway robbery, but I saw a use for the memory card capability and being able to photo doc server and comm racks for future reference. If you go look at one take it outside and try to use it in the sun or bright daylight, that will cool your jets fast :D but all the color LCD's are like that.. we have blackberrys too, not impressed, too small for a puter too big for a phone...

Oh - I've already got one. Bought it PP for $100, and reactivated it with T-Mobile. It's repalcing a Treo 270 that fell out of my pocket and exploded.

I hear you on the durability - I'm also fairly active, and things on my belt get bumped off or knackered about pretty good if I don't watch out. I don't get cases from "fancy" or "trendy" shops - I usually go to the Army/Navy store for what I need. It's got to fit a 1-3/4" Rigger's Belt, and I want a FULL LOOP, not a damn clip (that's how I lost the Siemens that replaced the Treo 270 immediately - had it handy.)

I've got a decent belt case for the Treo 600 - it's a padded case made by BBC, and I got it locally. I'll probably replace it with something from Blackhawk Industries later - once I get a few other things done.

I wanted a newer Treo to replace the older one (I'm familiar with the troubles of the colour LCD in full daylight - and I wear polarised lenses during the day, which makes LCD's in general even more fun!) and this one crossed my path with a good price. I get 'phones for my convenience - not for everyone else's, and having the Treo eliminates the need to carry the Clie for scheduling, assignment tracking, and notes & references that I need to keep ready to hand.

I was just wondering if there was anything fun that you might know about. My wife has a Treo 650 that she got from work - but I'm less than impressed that the Treo 700w runs WinCE (pronounced "wince," as you probably know already,) and I prefer PalmOS, since I already know it from about version 3.0 forward.
