Eagle Rock Trail Ride 9-19-08

as you can see, photography is not my best talent... along with offroading =)

these were the few photos i got to take in between getting pulled out of holes and stuffing cheddar brats down my gullet. =)

Indeed that was one VERY long day.

I was late after having to meet with Jeff (planefixer) to drop of Raffle Jeep parts and getting a little turned around before finding the Home Depot. And then there was DutchVDub getting caught behind that HUGE parade of Fire/Rescue vehicles in town for the Emergency Vehicle Expo in the 'Springs...... the group didn't leave the H.D. until after 10am.

It's been forever since I'd been up there 'wheeling (Jeez, since my S-10 days about '92....) and forgot how long that drive up Gold Camp road is..... the washboard was hideous! Rockhounds4x4, Rokken and I decided to abandon the tow rigs about 2/3rds the way up.... the road was litterally bashing our trucks to hell!

While unloading the towed rigs, Ranger Rick found his hydraulic clutch line had burst and he had to turn back. Thanks Fred for ensuring he got back down ok! With a group this size we simply couldn't wait any longer.

Got to the trail head with most of the group around 11am and xj-grin and one other got separated from us and couldn't find us after we'd crossed the pond and gathered in the meadow. I think it was around 11:45 when we actually started the trail. Frank had been leading, but had to head out prior to that to get to his boy's football game so he missed out on all the "fun"..... :D

Things were going fairly well until we got to the long, steep uphill climb. Nothing but very loose sand/gravel and BIG rocks - and dug out in between. I'll tell you one thing though....... I don't know who that guy in the gold XJ with the budget boost was that had been hauling Slowerthanu the video guy around but that guy knows how to 'wheel. He stayed ahead of the group for most of the run and negotiated that nasty big hill unassisted where most had to take a strap or winch.

That big hill definitely reminded many of us why it's so important to have solid tow points. I hated having to strap/winch that one XJ using the front axle as a tow point....... but it was the only option. The same XJ nearly cooked it's engine - the aux. fan wasn't working and the CPS was questionable, but between strapping/winching the others, Dutch, 'Stang and I got the fan hotwired and he made it to the end with the rest of us.

There were a few other sections where I was totally surprised there wasn't more carnage. That guy with the TJ spent a helluva lot of time on his gas tank and I'm glad it didn't rupture! 'Stang got sideways into a tree when we had the 3-rig straping train going but managed to NOT bust the side window. Dutch FLOGGED his rig at times and I was expecting someone to get pinged on the melon by a u-joint cap or something.....:D and he did cave in his pass. door sliding into a tree. I spent alot of time on that damn rear driveshaft/rear pinion yoke - left a lot of metal on the rocks. I need a high pinion 9" third member........

It was cool to see snwy_mnt_jeep's girl get some seat time! She hung in there like a champ and didn't get frustrated as Rockhound and I helped spot her through that rough section! LOL - I even offered a pass. seat ride to SurfXJSnow on one technical section ...... and his fiancee' pretty much pushed past him to ride in the Truggy when he hesitated....... sorry brutha - snooze ya lose! :D

It was good to see that everyone kept up their enthusiasm eventhough the trail took forever - ALL of us were starving by the time we got to fire up the grills and eat lunch..... er, dinner actually.....:D

SurfXJSnow's little demonstration on how NOT to 'wheel the Colman Cooler obstacle was the perfect end to the day! :roflmao::roflmao::roflmao:

All in all - I think it was a great day! Several "newbies" got some great wheeling experiences and no one had to be towed out.

FWIW,
My son's team won 21-6. Great football game...I'm a tad horse this evening.

Awesome, wheeling, and your son won his game. Sounds like a good day:D

I got home at 9:30, got to love the drive back up to Milliken (near Greeley).

I had a good time and sorry for being one of those saying it should be ok for near stock rigs. Its been years since i ran it and it wasn't nearly as dug out when I did. I think if we were to do it early in the season it would be easier for the stockers.

As fun as it was I think I'm more a 4-5 rig person, I don' think I want to go up with that large a group again unless we're camping out.

I like 4-5 as well, I really thought about bringing the camping gear. Not a stock friendly trail and wasn't last year either...you could get a stock rig over it last year, but hence the reason it's lookin like it does....Overall good run on one of my favorite trails....gonna be sad when they close it down.

My only couple pics, kept forgetting the camera...that and bringing up the rear I pretty much just drove the trail, not much playin around as I was between the two groups

.......there's a theme going on here or is it me?

It took you guys like 4 times longer to run the trail as planned, it was suppose to be a lunch cookout right?

Looks like fun times were had, I agree with you Dutch the larger groups, they can be lots o fun, but take soooooo long. Glad all of you made it in one piece from what I read except for RangerRick, he get his clutch fixed?

Can't wait to see the rest of the pics................and vids :greensmok

Me and the Rockfrogs came off of Saran Wrap and just missed getting in front of you on Eagle Rock!
:cry::cry::cry:

But no big deal!!

It was slow going behind you guys for awhile, but we had an open YJ with us that had to fight that same hill for a long time, and it gave us a chance to come up and say HI to everyone later, I got to gab with Fred a little before he headed down right before that hill!

The trail is alot more dug out then last time I did it in 2007, watching those stock XJ's really brought back the memories of when I first started wheeling, no tow hooks, highway tires, lot's of throttle and bouncing around! Good times!

Glad nobody broke a u-joint, I always used to whenever I would get my tires spinning, still do!, must be some good CARma in your group!

not sure the name, but I didn't have the wifey, I was running with my bro Eric and his dog:D Last heep up everything.

..sorry I had to bail on the BBQ, we had to get back to the springs, sounds like a good time was had, I dropped the chow and booked it down the mountain...

...wish I could have seen the Coleman obsticle:cheers:

Sounds like I missed a good time!! Well, I did have a good time at the AF game though they lost....only by a TD though!! Good game!! Our first club run(well unofficial) included 26 vehicles mostly stockers and Madano was the trail...GOOD TIMES!!

Yeah, I was thinking to myself that my tent and sleeping bag sounded a lot more comfortable than going home to the wife 6hrs late. :D Its all good, she forgave me.

I was wanting to ask you too man, what part of Monatana are you from? I grew up in Great Falls.

yeah, that put me kind of a foul mood. sorry if i was a bit impatient going up the trail because of it, i hate traffic and i hate being late to things. it gets me in a bad mood, so my apologies to everyone.

That was some fun stuff. A great example of TDAR (trail damage assessment and repar)

Dutch FLOGGED his rig at times and I was expecting someone to get pinged on the melon by a u-joint cap or something.....:D and he did cave in his pass. door sliding into a tree.

Well i was aiming for you. :D But its definately time for a 4:1 regear in my t-case. Will help me ease up the rocks a bit easier with my manual.

I spent alot of time on that damn rear driveshaft/rear pinion yoke - left a lot of metal on the rocks. I need a high pinion 9" third member........

I saw that, it hung you up a few times actually. Of course not running your tires at 30psi would help too. :D

I will say I loved driving your truggy the whole 20-30ft I got to. That thing rides really smoothe.

Want to help me put an exo-cage on my rig?

haqha ya that was boyd....we put that 'lift' on the night before simply so he cold go up!....hahaha he has that pin it to win it mentality

ha ya that was my girl.....she woke me up this morning talkin about driving and how much she liked it and everyone helping her out....so thanks a lot again to you guys...

i think its really cool when the ladies get involved and are excited abou it....i think it makes the whole thing a bit more interesting
(plus i get more vredits for parts! party1:)

Well, I made it home by 2:30 with no clutch. I made it down the hill with Fred following OK till he motioned me over because of smoke. Caused by trying to keep a slow pace down the mountain by using the emergency brake near the top and forgot to release it. No real damage though.
On I-25 I realized that I hadn't aired up my tires and pulled off the shoulder were the cops sit to do so. The biggest problem I had was getting back into traffic. Traffic was one steady stream and it took me more than a half mile to get up to speed riding on the shoulder before I could move into traffic. (No gaps to pull in, even going 60 dodging trash).
The master clutch cylinder and the all plastic (junk) line to the slave is a one piece unit with vary little room for the line. I knew patching it wouldn't get me through the trail trouble free. Oh well, it's better happening hear than at the Fall Fling.
Wish I could have made the run with the group. Nice meeting some of the group. I hope all the non members felt welcome and had a good time.
Thanks Fred,
Rick

I was right behind Boyd and watched him maneuver up the hill, he only had to backup a few times. Sorry we left you guys behind, but Boyd made the hill look fairly easy and I walked right up it and Shane was right behind me, so we ran down to the next obstacle. I ran up the rock pile to the right and Boyd got stuck on the "easy" line to the far left. He was stuck on his control arm, Shane had to yank him off, then he walked up the middle line. Shane followed Boyd up the middle line with no problems. All in all it was a fun day, nice and relaxing trail run. It was fun to watch all the open open guys going through the obstacle's.

Troy learn to drive that thing or I'll have to repo the damn thing

looks like I lost my trailer license plate somewhere up there, did anybody happened to see it, pick it up?

Thanks
Ken

Damn It had to work. :puke:

Looks like you all had fun. Need more pics though.

I have done that trail several times this year and last. Hard to believe it was ever a stock vehicle trail. :dunce:

But I'll believe you if you say so:looney::looney:

Hope fully I can make the next run. Maybe Sunday would be better.
