Just makes more sense to me. To get a used alternator about $50 from a junkyard that the cost of a new optima battery for $180 ? Really do the math ! I mean after you get the jeep to your house. You will need a new/used alternator anyway.

I don't see why. A good alternator should be fine for a discharged battery. If not, it's not a good alternator. An alternator should be inherently current limited, which is why, unlike DC generators, they do not need a current regulator in addition to the voltage regulator. I have never ever killed an alternator charging a battery, and I've run some very iffy batteries long past their prime!
