just swapped out my D35 with a D44 from an XJ. The builder of the axle gave me what I think was the donor shaft. It is not even close as to fitting... too short.

so I just kept the current shaft... but I only have about 1/2 " of compression. Will this work or do i need to get it shortened?

I have a trip to MOAB coming up and need to be sure.

THANKS!!!

I agree on getting it shortened... but here in waco I can't find a shop/place to do it. Secondly how do i know how short ? :( What is the proper way to measure for correct length?

Found a local shop to do it :) Now just need specifics on how / what to measure for correct cut.

Am I assuming all the other d35-d44 conversions the owner has SYE?

I only have 3" lift... did not think i required it :(

i swapped in a d44 at 2" of lift and kept the d35 drive shaft, never had any issues, ive ran d35 shafts with 8.25's also without issues, gives you a lil better angles and more engegment of the slipyoke

I used my D35 shaft too when I put in my 44. I think if it hadn't fit I would have gotten a SYE and a front shaft rather than throwing comparable money at having the existing one shortened. I think I paid $150 to have one shortened/rebalanced here 10 years ago. Not sure how much its gone up since then...

hell ask wren...he just had one done

$200 to have shortened here in Waco only 2 places that can / will do it.

Now the dilema... I want a SYE for $200ish but don't really have time :(

Planning on trailering to Moab on the 21st.

Some are saying I'm OK with stock and the D44 others say no... I am not sure how to proceed :( on open road it seems fine but I know I could destoy a lot if too long :confused1

I can post pic this evening...

No drop or anything... 3"lift with drooping leafs ;)

I probaly will go with a SYE and new driveshat combo but not until I get back from Moab. Just want to try and be as safe as possible in the interim. I'm trailering to Moab but that's no excuse for deliberately busting something.

While doing this upgrade I am changing fluids.

transfer case... what is capacity (looked in haynes and can't find)

Should I use ATF like recommended or use gear oil? If gear oil... synthetic?

you could get a longer slip yoke as well for the time being i think they are around $40
