Drill bit advice?

My buddy brought over a drill bit doctor(sharpener) but I don't think it's worth a damn.

Read the directions. If it's not working right, you're not going it right or the needs a new sharpening wheel. I've done thousands of bits on the one we have at work and it still looks like new.

masonry bits.
Nope.

i think the masonry bits were a joke (at least im hoping)

maybe its just cuz my MAC tool guy is awesome but MAC warranties their drill bits for lifetime which is badass..

agreeing with souske you probably hardened the metal.. although using oil lubricant is good to much of it especially with heating the metal up will harden the metal and just dull the shit out of you bits quick with no progress....glad the welding technique worked out though

not a joke. I have had good luck drilling out fasteners with carbide tipped masonry bits.

the same kind I use to put bolt anchors in rocks. they don't dull up like that photo.

try norseman black and gold,
This. We have these at the machine shop I work at. I've used a lot of bits and the majority of them were crap compared to the Norseman.

I've used a buddies at work, they came in a cylinderical sleeve kind of deal with a screw on lid. Seriously the best bits I've ever used, and I've burned up TONS of bits. I used to work for a welder and we were constantly pushing the limits of the mag-drill trying to ram a 1/2" hole through a steel girder. I've never paid attention to the brand but I'd guess they're snap-on. I'll look tomorrow (tech now, no longer weld).

EDIT: markw those are them!!!! Good lord what a difference quality bits make. For $86 I'm buying a set right now. Pretty sure my friend paid around $250 for his, marked up of course.

Drill doctors work great, Ive had tremendous luck with their commercial model. It takes time to learn the skill of sharpening.

I have limited experience drilling metal, but everytime I have trouble and my arms are getting sore I use the drill doctor, sharpen the bit and all of the sudden I'm removing material again.

I have craftsman titanium bits (which are probably crap) but this seems to bring them back to life.
