Dremmel for trimming. How long will it take?

asp, that really looks like crap in the front (as well as the back). I did a better job with my side cutters. They actually turned out awsome I thought. It was my first time doing it or even seeing it done, but I took my time and did a good job. I already put the door guard on it, but I'll get pics of it up to look at.

i just used a hacksaw when i did cut and fold. cut reliefs and just folded it over by hand. probaly made 20 1 1/4 inch cuts on each fender. took me about half an hour to do it all. (all 4 corners)

I knew hacksawing was a good idea! Quick enough and less chance of messing up

Looks ok, who cares though, if he actually wheels it its gonna get banged up anyways.

do you want a cookie?

i did take my time and i think it looks fine. it's just missing a little bit of trim and paint- thanks winkosmosis. it was my first hour of ever using an angle grinder too. it might look like crap to you because i cut more metal of than most people do so i have more clearance it therefore is better for wheeling... wheeling is what we are here for right? not to hate on eachother's work.

Sorry dude, wasn't hating.

If you are gonna tear the shit out of it anyway, more power to ya. Mines my DD and I want it to look good, too. I've seen enough rides on here to know that some could care less what they look like, some take great pride in the appearance of their Jeeps. I know which yours is now.

I wouldn't "learn" how to use a grinder on my Jeep, but hey, that's just me.

And yes, give me the damn cookie....

mine's a DD but looks matter less in my book. to each his own i suppose. eh "learning to use a grinder" on these cuts wasn't bad. i'll post pics after i clean it up with some trim and paint. anyway, enough BS. back to tech.

what sort of trim have you used to line the front fenders after you trimmed them? i've heard of door trim and "protecto trim," whatever that is...

NP, man, each to their own!

Here's what I got for the edges, and it was great to work with and looks great! I got 20" of it for 18 bucks or so shipped.

yeaaaah that's the stuff i was looking for. the sheet metal is thick enough for it to grab enough and stay on, right?

Yea, it fits perfect. It's actually a metal strip on the inside that grips the sheetmetal really tight. I got it started around the fender , cut to length, then went back and tapped it all the way on all around the fender.

The stuff looks nice and should hold great!

I'll get some pics of it up.

This an after pic. I should have took some through the whole thing but just forgot. The rock sliders are another thing I recently added. The lift is sitting in the living room, adj. trackbar on the way, and checking out tires.

I've got the addiction. :shhh:

That trim looks perfect. Ideal for touching up the exposed metal with whatever kind of paint you want, then this can cover it up. When I trim, I might do this, and then cover it with the pipe insulation for a complete look with a slight fender appearance to it.

When I first trimmed mine, I used a cutoff wheel in a grinder, and cut to the lip in the front and cut and folded as high as I could in the back without having to weld. I liked the look, and I had a BB with 31s, so it worked out well. Fast forward to a winter wheeling trip and crunching both fenders because my bumpstops were about 1/2" too short on each side(later fixed with skate wheels glued to the spring perches).

Once the fenders were bent up, it didn't take much driving on the interstate before the metal started flexing and ripping. I had about a 4-6" rip in the metal in each fender, near the lower body line, and the fenders were very, very floppy. I decided they needed some attention, so I added TJ flares. By doing this, I cut out about another 4" higher and the flare itself added a lot of structure back to the fenders, and made them look finished again.

TO ALL THE PRETTY BOYS AND GIRLS
I chopped the hell out of my fenders today used a sawsall and bent them in with a hammer, it doesent look "GOOD" but it doesent look "BAD" either and gives me the clearance i need and that was the point of doing it. and btw you will never see my jeep at the mall or in a truck show. it is all about function. so keep polishing your rig with your panties and ill pull ya out later.

:D Yeah, okay, you're "hardcore", we get it.

There's certainly room for a smooth, nice looking trim on a rig that runs challenging trails as well as a mall-crawler. Someone said it earlier in the thread, it's all about what's important to you and how much pride you take in sweating the details. I'll take the extra time to make something look, fit, and work as well as possible, even if I'm the only one who'll ever see it or know it's there. It's just a philosophical difference between pure function or function plus form. The XJ lends itself well to the second one, as they look quite nice if you don't bounce them off of trees and smash them into rocks.
