Doorless?

I emailed the State of TN with:

I have a Jeep Cherokee and was considering making the doors removable
(similar to a Jeep Wrangler). What are the rules for this? Can you point
me to the applicable state regulation for this?

And received this:

There is no State law that regulates doors on vehicles. You are permitted to do this.

I think that is what we have been saying. The law/rule is federal and is for the rear view mirrors. If you look you will find that federal regs require at least 2 working rear view mirrors on a vehical.

Sure, the but original question was:

are there any laws about cruising around with no doors here?

While I'm not around there, we now know there's no laws about removing the doors themselves.

Yep and it does not have to be one of the mirrors on the passenger side. I found that out when I got my first car: 91 cherokee with only a driver's door mirror and the rear view mirror. There was a factory delete plate over the location on the passenger door.

Yea it has to be driverside and rear view I believe. And yes you are correct BA the origianl question was that but those of us that have learned it the hard way try to help others from doing the same. Hence the mirror comments.

Well, what if you hung one really long mirror (like those in school buses)? Then you'd have complete coverage.

Here's some more info:

55-9-206. Trucks to be equipped with rearview mirror. —
Any motor truck using the streets, roads, highways, and other public thoroughfares, which, by reason of its
construction, either when loaded or unloaded, prevents the driver's view of the rear, shall be equipped with a mirror
arranged in a manner and maintained so that the driver or operator may view the roadway to the rear and note the
approach of vehicles from the rear of the motor truck.

thats exactly what i posted at the top of the page alpha...

ive got a drivers side mirror and a rear view...thats all you need.

i've been driving in GA with out doors on my yota for a few weeks now with out mirrors and i've been fine

I'd get a mirror on there to avoid a ticket. If you get pulled and they get irritated its something they can add to it.

NOT RELATED BUT i just road around in my neighborhood with the windshield down and it was alot of fun... i really need to get my roll cage finished up so i can ride like that on the trails :D

Until you ride behind someone like me and get a mouth full of dust and dirt.

you know what I do, I go to the shop I use to work at with or with out my doors and it seems to pass everytime. On a serious note...I did drive around for about 6 months all over NC without my doors or legal mirrors and never got pulled "knock on wood" but I think if they were to pull you over they would likely have a different reason and just so happen to get you for the doors
