Door Speaker Install for speakers that wouldn't fit

I'd like to see how you mounted speakers in the front doors that according to specs would hit the window and the door panel.

Every coaxial and component speaker system I've "really" liked won't go in without some work. All are 6-1/2 or 6-3/4. I have a 2001 Sport. There are several cheaper, less exciting 6-1/2 speakers that will fit, but I don't wanna make do. I want what I want. I'm even considered cutting a hole in the door panels and covering the hole with an 8" speaker grill painted to match the panel.

Let me see what you've done.

P.S. This tread is not for "I have XXXX speakers that fit perfectly with no mods and sound better than every system I've ever heard."

How you tested them to see if they really don't fit? I have a set of Inifinity 6.5" Kappas components in the front doors that fit fine.

Again, not to be rude, but if you have speakers that fit with no modification, please refrain from posting.

You want what you want, then get what you want and make it fit. It isn't rocket science.

According to what specs? I haven't heard of any speakers being too deep for the XJ window/door. You really can't rely on specs some place because most are wrong. The only way to be sure is to get the speakers and test fit.

take your door apart, measure it, and find something that will fit. if the magnet or basket is too wide and will hit the window you have no good reason to put it up there.

for proper staging the larger speakers with the deeper sound need to be behind you anyway. thats like putting the subwoofer for your home surround system right in front of the TV. no matter how nice it is ti isnt going to sound right.

Can you Tell me WHAT SPEAKERS you have that WONT fit?

For crying out loud, I have 6x9s in all 4 doors. and they are DEEP.
Wtf are you trying to mount? a Stadium Loudspeaker?

I had to drill new holes to mount my 6.5's so I think that's technically modification

Unfortunately, you can't just walk into a store, pull speakers out of the box, test fit them, and put them back on the shelf, especially if the store isn't local, so you kinda have to got by the manufacturer's specs.

As for speakers that won't fit, I'm betting Pioneer Premier TS-C720PRS (which I'm not interested in buying), would be a challange.

The 2-5/8" long basket is barely smaller than the diameter of the mounting hole and stays that diameter all the way to the bottom of the magnet. The window frame in my door is 1-7/8" from the face of the door frame and about an inch in from the perimeter of the mounting hole. I believe my window is 2-1/4" from the face (I'll have to measure later). 2 and 3-way speakers often hit the panel, especially if a spacer is used. So, yes, there are 6-1/2" speakers that won't fit without modification. I wan't to see these modifications.

the "specs" on my Kicker 6x9s says they have a mounting depth of 3-5/16ths

Shall i post pics with windows up, and windows down?

I assume these on in your 1989 XJ? I have to assume they've made some changes between then and 2001. Those certainly won't fit anywhere in my Jeep without modification.

my 89 is a limited. it has all the power features. The only modification i had to do was cut the hole. I mounted the speaker over to doorpanel, I would assume that absorbed 3/4"
The factory door speaker locations did not change from 84-01' and the magnet of your speaker should be mounted under the corner window of your door, and NOT under the actual moving window. It is my understanding that the doors are internally the same for both Generations of the XJ minus cosmetic changes and possible change in electronic connections.

So? Do you really want help or you just here to be stupid?

It sounds like you already know what you want, and what you want to do. Go do it.

For what its worth, I have a 97 SE that has one sport fender on it, and the stock speakers fit just fine without modification.

I guess everything IS bigger in Texas, including A-holes. Talyn was trying to help you. BTW, how do speakers count as "Street and performance tech?"
