D'OH! Let Tranny Hang, now it leaks...

Ok, I was rebuilding my transfercase (NP242) on my 91 Cherokee 4x4, AW4. The transmission was supported with a jack and while waiting for SYE parts I decided to proceed with replacing my rear shackles with boomerangs. A

After I lifted the rear tires off the ground and put jackstands under the frame I realized that my transmission was hanging there without the crossmember OR the jack!!!

I put the crossmember on temporarily while I am waiting for the 242 to be finished. However, the transmission is now leaking. Its hard to say from where because there is so much oil down there now. It was a small drip at first that has toned down. Maybe some of the fluid just spilled out when it was hanging down momentarily.

Did I mess something up by letting it hang there? It was less than 10 minutes before I realized what I did.

Thanks for any help.

It could have leaked out the vent or pulled the dipstick tube out.
I'm pretty sure that the rear shaft it not sealed so the splins get oil so oil would leak out some with it down, I say no harm done.

Thanks for the reply John.

I think you're right. It's not leaking anymore. It was just dripping for a few days after the mishap.

I will check the pickup tube.

Jeep on!
