detroit or lunchbox in rear 44

Hold on, I'm not the one pissing in your wheaties. You said something, I responded, and so forth.

Yeah I wheel it, in the rocks around here.

As for stuff with stock gearing, well, it's all about driving style.

Didn't say it didn't suck, just that I've adapted to it, and am seeing some good mileage.

and do math, how would you save $250 if you didn't get the detroit? seems to me you would save $190.
wow you must be proud of yourself for that one....

does anyone have any USEFULL information?
is a lock-rite going to hold up to 33's in a D44?
or is it better to just get the detroit for the long run for when i eventually run 35's?

tire slippage doesnt just happen from a big gust of wind... and 18 wheelers dont blow by me because im usually not going 30 miles an hour on the freeway. you know whats not too awful fun?.... getting deathwobble 4 times in a row in under a minute on a busy street. ive had my rear welded for quite sometime now and it really sucks to have the rear always locked going around turns and stuff. im pretty sure your gonna get a lot more "sllipage" out of a spool in wet condition when turning than an automatic locker.
and if i really wanted to save money why wouldnt i just weld it?

You live in california, I lived there for a few years... I hate that place... I lived in San Bernardino and it was hot as balls all the time... anyways, with it being dry out there 90 percent of the time, a detroit may work better for you, but here in west virginia where the weather conditions are unpredictable, auto lockers are not the way to go... with a welded rear or spool you can expect slippage and drive accordingly... another thing, I don't drive 30 on the interstate either, but I rarely go over 65 in my jeep and semis do blow by me doing 80 or 85 and yes, with an autolocker it does throw you ALL over the place. In fact, it even does it with limited slips. you wanted opinions so I gave mine... as the old saying goes... Opinions are like assholes... everyone has one and they all stink... do whatever you want buddy... whatever floats your boat

ok well i drive 80 so i can actually get where im going sometime that week. if im on the freeway but i rarely am. the only time im on the freeway is to go to a trail. and i didnt ask if i should get a spool.. i asked if a lockrite will hold up ok with 33's, possibly 35's, or should i just shell out for the detroit. not should i get a spool, or should i float some boats cause u used to live in california. i dont care where you lived or where you live now....

some one erase this thread please....

hey buddy,
i got a lockright cheap (free) and put it in my dana 35 and it is plenty strong for 33"s. i would expect every part of my 35 to break before the locker. i am building my xj dana 44 from a 87 and im thinking about putting a lunchbox locker in it as well. i like it a lot.

thanks,
i think im gonna go with the detroit though just because i know i will regret it when i go 35's and i want something that i KNOW is gonna be rock solid and bulletproof!

Guess you missed it earlier. I'd go with and Aussie locker. I have one in a D44 in my 71 CJ-5. I'm running 35s on it. No problems. Aussies cost less than a lock rite, and are supposed to be engineered better.

If I had to pick, it'd be an Aussie locker over a lock rite. Even if I had the money for a Detroit, i think I'd still choose the Aussie, haven't heard anything bad about them, yet.

yeah i think that there is a tire size limit on some of the lunchbox's. but ohh well im gettin a detroit and im excited to try out my new gears and locker on the rubicon.
thanks for those of you who actaully gave some opinions that mattered...

ive heard of them breaking but very rarely. i knwo a lot of people that run detoits that love them and havent had any problems. i have no idea but i think i should be ok with my setup: rear dana 44 (30 spline) with a detroit and 4.88's. np242 and aw-4. although i may do that torque converter solenoid wiring thing suggested in 4wheel mags article- weak links strong fixes for xj' and mj's.
