detroit or lunchbox in rear 44

i have a rear xj 44 and im going to be ordering gears tomorrow.
ill be getting 4.88's in my 30 front and 44 rear. im going to be leaving the front open but i want the rear locked. i have it welded right now because i knew i was going to regear soon and figured why not?
ive got 33's but plan on getting 35's after i long arm and cage it.
so my question is: for a rear locker should i go full detroit? or should i go cheepo lunchbox? i cant just wait and save up to get the detroiy though either because the rubicon run is comin up and the gears need to be in by june 23.
rear open carrier: about $60
rear e-z locker to go into the open carrier: about $250
rear detroit(which replaces the carrier): about $500
so i would be saving about $250 if i didnt get the detroit.

I'd say pony up and get the detroit, assuming you are paying someone else to do your gears for you. It will suck to pay someone to rebuild the diff again. And you are going to have to get a new carrier anyway if you are going up to 4.88, unless you have 3.73 or lower (num higher). If you have stock 3.55 or less, the 4.88 won't fit. So the cost of a new carrier is $60 and the lunchbox is $250, you are already over $300, spend the other $200 and be done with it.

goin with the detroit!!!
im soo excited to have deep gears because im so extremely sick of daily driving 33's on 3.55 gears. it sucks!!!
with a detroit, 4.88's in a dana 44 and 33's its gonna be sick!!!

i'd get a no slip.

uhh yeah thats why i posted the prices for how much the lunch box and carrier were compared to just the detroit..... but its ok sometimes i forget how to read too....

hey why not!?!?! thats only, hmm lets seee.... $1100 just for the rear. but why stop there when i could get cutom length 35 spline chromoly with an ARB..... turning 33's. are you sure its gonna hold though?

I think I paid $970 from Six States for mine.......

I from Highland Oaks.....off Foothill Rd.

about as close you can get to 1 ton before the 60, in the dana catagory
i have 33's not 44's i dont need some crazy 33 spline $1000 kit for a dana 44. if i wanted that i would just get a 9" or 60. it a lot cheaper than the super 44 kit

What sucks about 33 on 3.55s? I'm running that. I recently adjusted my driving style, and the last two tanks have been 21 and 20 MPG. I drive it in 3rd instead of OD.

Congrats on the Detroit. I would've gone with an Aussie, but that's only cause I've been running one in my CJ and like it.

whats wrong with it? it sucks its horrible. its puts an extreme amount of stress on everything when wheeling. ive broken 2 yokes 4 driveshaft ujoints and im getting mad axle wrap.

ohh and i do drive it in 3rd instead of 4th on the freeway except its annowing and not very fuel efficient to run 3,000-3,500 RPMs at 70 mph

Hmmm, I drive around 2500 RPMs, and that is right near 70 for me, friend in a VW clocked me. Speedo read about 63 when I was doing 70, and right around 2600 RPMs, might just be me, but it's not bad. Peak torque is around 2800, so I've been trying to stay under that for my cruise speed.

and do math, how would you save $250 if you didn't get the detroit? seems to me you would save $190.

And you're splitting hairs. We knew what he meant, and we can all do the math. He'd be saving a sizable amount.

I'm gonna be the bad guy I guess... screw detroits... Have you ever been cruising down the interstate and had an 18 wheeler blow by you with that big gust of wind, causing tire slippage and your detroit kicks in... not too awful fun especially on slick roads... I am gonna say I would spool it... always predictable and the money you save by not going with a detroit can go towards tires you will need just slightly prematurely b/c of the wear issue... keep the meat rotated and a spool is the way to go

tire slippage doesnt just happen from a big gust of wind... and 18 wheelers dont blow by me because im usually not going 30 miles an hour on the freeway. you know whats not too awful fun?.... getting deathwobble 4 times in a row in under a minute on a busy street. ive had my rear welded for quite sometime now and it really sucks to have the rear always locked going around turns and stuff. im pretty sure your gonna get a lot more "sllipage" out of a spool in wet condition when turning than an automatic locker.
and if i really wanted to save money why wouldnt i just weld it?

u might be used to your rig on 33's with 3.55's on the road but do you wheel it? in the rock?
drive anything else that has a stock gear ratio and youll find yourself accelerating exceccively.
it may not suck to you but it does to me and im getting gears so you can like it or hate it i dont care....
