If'n I were an amoral scumbag intent on causing damage and pain, I can't think of a much better environment to do so that a place where the public is disarmed as a matter of law (or in the case of a private business, by a completely lawful but foolish choice). Gun free zones suck, and we should all make the conscious decision to not patronize private businesses that choose to sacrifice the safety of their customers for political correctness -- speak with you wallet.

Until you're in an "oh sh*t" situation, you won't realize how woefully inept you actually are. You just hope you live through the situation then you train better. I cringe at the thought of being in that theater that night :shiver:

The moral of the story is this: train hard, and train smart. You'll never be ready for every situation, but the goal is to be as prepared as possible. For everyone's sake. You might actually save lives in the future :thumbup:

It's not the parents fault in the least bit , And I don't see how the time of day puts the parents at fault ...I could see if they took the baby along to a crack house at midnite and the baby got shot , but a midnite showing of Batman does not qualify as bad parenting .

Not knowing you or your age, but having raised 3 kids myself, this was not something I would have done to see any movie.

My heart goes out to those families devastated by this horrendous act.

Sadly the guy is going to live for many more years but somehow I don't foresee him ever showing any remorse....

A long life in prison is too good for this man. A death sentence carried out quickly is a far better solution...regardless of the cost.

I would agree that we are physically a healthy state but Colorado routinely falls (I looked back to about 2005) within the top ten of states with the highest suicide rates in the nation. It's important to note that the statistics for suicide do NOT include military as most make that assumption. I would argue that we are NOT a mentally healthy state.

Chris I'm glad you qualified your statement about public education and funding. It sucks and the people of Colorado need to wake up. We are one of the top states in the nation when it comes to residents with higher levels of degrees but we do not see value in education because we don't support funding it. Always a mystery to me.

As to why Colorado...I attended a training recently where we discussed recent studies and theories on elevation and mental health. Statistics are showing that in the US, the states with the highest rates of suicide are Western. Alaska is an easy one and we should throw it out. Out of the top 15 cities for suicide, Colorado Springs ranked second and Denver ranked 8th. Las Vegas was first. It is believed that oxygen deprivation plays a critical role in those rankings. Theories suggest that oxygen deprivation leads to depression which then leads to suicide.

Its ironic because states where people say they are unhappy, have lower rates of suicide. Like New York. People said they were unhappy but their rates of suicide were low. Places where people claimed to be happy actually had much higher rates of suicide.

Colorado is routinely ranked as one of the fittest and healthiest populations in the nation, both mentally and physically. Colorado's public school system -- while I am not a fan -- is generally ranked very near the top nationwide in both performance and college admission, though underfunded compared to other underperforming states...

Welcome to Saudi freakin' Aurora, where the rents are lower and the people are stranger. The APD has a sub station in every high school. I've walked through metal detectors and submitted to wanding to go roller skating...on gospel music night. My wife used to drop off the kids at the Jr. High, and watch the other kids take off colors as they walked up. The same city, where just a few weeks ago, police cordoned off a block in search of a bank robber. I'm not surprised at policy or ordinances that are designed to harass the minor percentage who chose to live outside average social mores.

Just some of the many reasons we moved out of that stink hole ten years ago.

My condolances to the families of the victims, and the family of the wack-job that did this.

Interesting, Chris, I wondered about altitude... I've never seen a stat that put Colorado Springs up near the top on suicides when the military element was eliminated from the equation, but I don't doubt you.

I've been puzzling over my coffee on this tragedy this morning, and trying to figure out the Colorado demographic question -- Colorado is roughly 75% non-natvies, and those folks come from literally all over the nation from a multitude of different backgrounds, ethnicities, income brackets, etc. Colorado is roughly 50/50 democrat/republican, and generally neither party is particularly radical (as say opposed to California democrats, or southern republicans)... just about as "purple" a state as is possible. Colorado is routinely ranked as one of the fittest and healthiest populations in the nation, both mentally and physically. Yet, this marks at least the 3rd mass random shooting in Colorado in less than 15 years (Columbine, Baily...) -- why Colorado? I don't have an answer, other than glib ones, I'm really curious...

While I fully appreciate your reasoning and thought process, it simply takes one disturbed kid to do something like this. Politics, physical fitness....what does that have to do with someone snapping? It doesn't take a religious radical. It doesn't matter if you jog or not. Your political party doesn't dictate your mental stability.

There are INTERNAL factors just as much as EXTERNAL that have to be considered. Did the kid have a problem with depression? Do chemical imbalances run in his family? Was he simply tired of excelling at school, getting phenomenal grades, and busting his ass only to be considered a social outcast by his peers? Did girls laugh in his face when he asked them out? Did he go to college only to discover he couldn't find a job? Maybe he simply spent too much time delving in violent media and figured he'd like to make his fantasies reality.

Who knows. Some of the most famous serial killers were genuises. Literally. When tested they have phenomenal IQs. This kid was just like that.

I don't know why this young man did this. I don't know why anyone does this. Perhaps that's because there isn't a tidy little formula for determining if someone is going to decide that tons of innocent people need to die because they're unhappy.

These types of shootings are tragic, but they shouldn't change anyone's opinion of this state or it's occupants. Psychos are rampant everywhere you go. Colorado is not an exception just because we have great scenery.
