Did my diffs today. Always have run Royal Purple cause the guy who did my gears and lockers suggested it.

I just didn't remember it costing so much. I think I paid nearly $20.00 a quart today. Others were 1/4th the cost.

Thoughts? Suggestions for next time?

It's also completely and totally unnessissary. I don't know why people continue to think if you spend ten times the money you are getting ten times the oil. If you want synthetic, run Mobil 1 and call it good. Especially in your diffs.

I despise royal purple. two bad experiences. one in fresh Toyota motor. the other in motorcycle.
amsoil ftw
otherwise just mobile1

'Not a huge fan of Royal Purple products myself. Not that it's bad stuff, but it's way overpriced and over-hyped.

More power/less friction, etc,.. whatever. I'm pretty sure the purple dye isn't a friction modifier. I've honestly been curious if there is any difference(doubt it,..), although not curious enough to do the labor involved in finding out.

I've made the following offer to a couple different people who swear by RP(generally to shut them up yapping about the stuff,..):
Do an oil change, put in Mobil 1 and a Wix filter, and do a mileage run.
Bring it back, change the oil to RP with a RP filter, fill the tank and do another mileage run(same day).
If the car gets better mileage, I'd pay for all the oil and all the gas. No takers yet.

i would stay away from amsoil as well, nearly killed my friends new truck, i cant say exactly what caused the oil to turn to tar but it did. so much so that it showed no oil pressure, lucky that was due to the tar clogging the screen filter before the pressure sending unit, went to drain the oil no oil came out, the bottom of the pan was caked in thick tar, had to bore through it to get it to drain,

truck was alway run on mobile 1 in the past, never had an issue, he started using amsoil products in his race bikes and figured he would give it a shot in the toy hauler.

motor has been cleaned and back on mobile 1, no problems since, strangest thing i have seen oil do honestly.
nothing but diesel would touch it, not seafoam, atf or any other combo we could dream up, a week long diesel bath started to break the gunk down

I can promise you it wasn't the Amsoils fault. Something else happened there. There is just far too much overwhelming evidence that its nothing but good.

That being said I still think its over priced. I run Mobil 1 in everything and never had an issue....for half the price of Amsoil and a quarter the price of RP.

did he flush and clean the system like amsoil says to before switching to it?

I set up gears and I break them in with the cheap stuff from wally world for a week or two then change out to Lucas. I do not see the point or the need to run synthetic in a differential.

I don't use it in my engine either. Shell Rotella 10w-30(winter)15w-40(summer)

If its good enough for a diesel then its good enough for a 4.0

If you want to spend that much money on fluids then that is your choice, I just don't see the need myself. Lucas is pricey but still cheaper than the cheapest synthetic.

Yeah, I did first time after break in. Was told at that time that the ected lockers I had would perform well with it. At that time I had just spent $$ on the axles so I didn't even flinch at the cost.

Since then I have changed it a couple of time and just figured that's what I use. The Ecteds have worked good.

Next time I'll do some research and check my options.

Where did you buy it from? Sometimes that makes all the difference.

My buddy runs Mobil 1 75w140 in his 8.8 with LSD. I went to Advance Auto and they were out of Mobil 1 75w140, but the price sticker said 19.99 a quart. Went to the Autozone 2 miles down the road and they had a bunch of Mobil 1 75w140 in stock for 10.99.

I'm not a fan of Mobil 1 oils, but I run their gear oil because it keeps the differentials nice and clean. I don't offroad much at all and never submerge the diffs so I keep it in there awhile. If there isn't any available I will run Coastal. Those seem to be the only choices at our local parts stores. The WalMart nearby never seems to have any in stock, or they just have 1 quart of Super Tech.

I thought of using synthetic oil in the ECTED I have in the rear D44 but instead went with the manufacturer recommended regular oil and an oil (friction modifier) additive. I have about 25,000 miles on it and it have worked well with the 30" tires that are being used at this time.

How often do you change your diff oil? Mine gets low miles, so it's more of a time thing than a miles thing.

Last time I think I went a little over a year in the front and 2 for the rear. The royal purple was grey kinda milky when it came out ??

This time I went just over a year and it looked dark with purple tint.

There must have been some water crossings in that previous change, I guess?

Valvoline dino oil in my diffs.. a front and rear diff service is $25.. not.. $100.. Screw that
