Dana 44 axle shaft

I have to remove the axle shafts to replace a leaky seal on my 1990 MJ with a dana 44. I just undo the four bolts on the retaining plate and the axle slides out or is it attached to the carrier assembly with a clip. Also do I need a puller to get the axle shaft out or will it just slide out??? Thanks

Do you have all the parts?

You will need a new seal retainer as well. Its what holds the bearing and seal on the axle and is pressed on when you bolt the axle into the housing. Theres 4 bolts and the axle will slide out. Then you will have to use a bearing remover to squeeze the bearing and seal retainer off.

Would it be safe to say this is the same for an XJ? I have the same problem with my '87.

An '87 XJ would have either a non-c-clip Dana 35 or a Dana 44, so it would be the same.

For '90 and newer XJs with the c-clip axles, you have to open the differential to remove the c-clip before you can slide the axle shaft out.

Dana 44 Info

If you have a true XJ dana 44 all of them will be set up this way. XJ never got a c-cliped 44..
