Shim pack numbers are absolutely worthless.Pinion pre-load,backlash,carrier pre-load,and pattern is all that counts!

I was giving the numbers so that you could tell me what kind of adjustments to make (i.e. move the carrier .003" closer to the pinion, etc.).

We don't have a housing spreader so I can't guess what the carrier preload is. It takes a couple big hits with a 4 lb deadblow to get the carrier fully seated. The other three issues are addressed in my last post.

Care to comment on how the pattern looks?

Here's what we got tonight.

Backlash: 0.008"
Pinion depth shim pack: 0.026"
Pinion preload shim pack: .065" (needs to change)
Ring gear side pack: 0.060"
Carrier side pack: 0.036"
Pinion preload: 2 in-lb

That's a usable pattern.

Usable meaning we should settle with it? Or try for something a little better?

I would run that but before you button that up remember that you need to grind a couple of the ring gear teeth down to get the cross pin installed. Or take your ring gear back off to install the pin and then check the pattern again.

You may not get any better than that, i'd run it.

Ok cool. We'll get it buttoned up this weekend and run the pattern one last time.
