Well, the hard drive finally tapped out. We bandaged it for a couple of years.... guess it had enough. Luckilly, we were able to save the important files before it died.

$1500 later........ we're back on line. :yikes:

Gotta love 22" monitors and converting the old 17" into the new den TV..... :D

Oh well. I suppose if you averaged the amount we paid for the last computer and accessories over the 4 years it lasted, the daily price to use it wasn't too bad......

You have to feed the addiction! We lived without out computers at one time....It would sure suck now though!

So what did you get?

HP 6257c. Not real computer savvy, but it should fit our needs just fine. 320G hard drive, Intel, Windows Vista. Added a video card for the 2nd monitor, external 320G hard drive (video/software storage), then bought several software update items to get things Vista compatible.

Looks good. We run HPs at work (Deskpro D530 mostly) and they have been very good PCs. Hopefully yours will be as well.

Let us know how Vista is. We have been testing it at work and I am not sure I like it.

Yeah, we were concerned about Vista as well, but luckilly, we have a complete software setup to swap it out and replace it with XP if it gets too goofy.

Probably coulda saved ourselves a coupla bucks just buying a new hard drive and having XP installed on it and used the same tower...... but it's kinda nice to have a service warranty again......:dunno:

LOL!

I got into computers just before the PC came out. The change has been incredible, both in machine achitecture, and the impact on our day to day lives. To get the computing ability, performance and storage capability of an inexpensive e-machines box nowdays, in 1980 would have taken a couple of super computers, the technicians to keep them running, the building to hold it, and a bank of money to purchase it. It used to take a Masters in Computer Science to deal with repairs, now they teach it in High School.

Glad you got your computer working Troy, wouldn't want you living in the stone age :wave1:

don't trust the HDD in that unit past 18 months. HP is still using samsung drives and we see about one a week that's in with bad sectors, they're always between 18 and 24 months old.

Why didn't you just replace the drive in the one you had?

Well, like I said above..... We coulda, but we're the kind of folks that like our warranties. We both felt like starting with a clean slate - the prev. HP has had 4 HD crashes recently. Just felt like we were pushing our luck.

And I hope we get to be the exception to the 18 month rule..... :yikes:
