D44 disc brakes conversion

How different are the xj/mj D44 axles? I've seen the writeups for the crown vic conversion and others but don't think I've seen anything on D35 discs (didn't know D35's had discs).

Zj d35's have discs.... The Ford backing plates require a lot of sculpting and new bearing retainers to fit..... The zj stuff just needs the center hole widened for the larger axle tube and it bolts on you need zj wheel studs too as thhey are longer, they also work on the 8.25 I did sams that way.

The xj/mj d44 just have outer flanges that match the 35 and 8.25 axle... Can't say the same for other 44's

i saw the write ups.. they require expanding the hole and some require welding..
which is all cool when you have the tools to do so.. if you dont.. then you have to buy bolt on crap..

I ve never seen D35 disc brakes..

I didn't have to weld anything on hers..... Hell she ground the centers out and bolted it all together while i set the gears up

I've only got 150 in her rear discs and I bought new everything, rotors pads hardware parking brake hardware parking shoes etc....it stops on a dime

Ooooooohh... i m not awake this morning! i feel rather grumpy too.

Hmmm looks like something else i need to put on the list for the manche when i get it done. Already replaced all the factory drum brake parts except the drums so far but it will be on the list for the next time i need to do the rear brakes.

Would the ZJ rotors allow for drilling a 5 x 5.5 bolt pattern?

I have the Crown Vic brakes on my XJ 44 and I must say that I really don't like them. If I could get the ZJ brakes to work, I would be willing to give it a try.

yeah they should.... its the same setup as the ford stuff only it takes less work to get it on there, the rotors are similar sizes IIRC

Is the passenger side caliper mounted upside down also or is it in the normal position?

Thanks Doug. I'm gonna give them a try and see what happens.

The XJ/MJ Dana 44 rear axle flanges DO NOT have the same flange bolt pattern as the D35 and 8.25. I can post pictures on my current ZJ disc conversion on my XJ D44 for proof and verification. The Crown Vic discs are a popular swap for the XJ D44 as they have the same flange bolt pattern so they are virtually bolt on with minor modifications and new axles retainer plates. The ZJ brakes require redrilling of the caliper brackets and backing plates to match the D44 flange bolt pattern and they also require new axle retainer plates which can be done with TJ Rubicon D44 axle retainer plates as they already have the necessary spacer built-in and only require re-drilling. I opted to go this route as I like the idea of keeping Jeep parts on my rig.

What about the Grands that have the 44 in the back. Granted it's the aluminum version that we don't want the entire axle from or any big parts, but did they come with rear discs too? Might be an easy option for going to the dealer or finding a site online that has the factory pieces for it and then it would be a bolt on install.
