Anyone have a spare set for cheap/free I can borrow/buy to hold my unit bearings together while I work to complete my axle swap?

Thanks,

Chris

You shouldn't ever have to use a stub shaft to hold unit bearings together - unless you're planning on driving on them without an axle shaft in the axle.... but that'd be another huge problem in itself.

Unit bearings are built and pressed together - if you have a unit bearing that wants to come apart - it needs replaced as it's worn out and dangerous.

Oooooh, that's baaaaad advice.
True, they are pressed together, but the outer shaft and nut hold them together.
Would you wanna trust a unit bearings press fit to keep your wheels on?
That is, if I read your post correctly.

Okie,

Yeah, you misunderstood me. If a person is trying to leave a wheel bolted to a unit bearing and intends to move the vehicle without an axle shaft with retaining nut tightened to the unit bearing - big problems will result. I'm fully aware that a unit bearing isn't intended to bear a load without the stub shaft / nut being torqued down inside it.

Chris,

I guess you better elaborate what you're trying to do with your axle project. Reading your post, I can't imagine why you'd need to remove the axle shafts from your D30 - while doing an axle swap - thinking the unit bearings will come apart. If you're going to remove the unit bearings while disassembling the components of the D30.... the unit bearings shouldn't come apart. Meaning that you shouldn't need a stub shaft just to keep the two pieces together.

Ya dig?

I knew ya knew, but I have lapses in thought once in awhile and ussumed everyone else does, as well.
Just forget I ever posted.:D

Thanks for the input guys, and i agree with you both. I am actually in the process of parting out my old D30, but will have to make a short trip with it soon, so I will be driving without inner shafts, but need the outers to hold the unit bearing together (I experienced this failure personally when I was younger and dumber). I don't see any problem with running only outers for a while... (?)

Since I plan on selling my shafts as a set, I don't wan't to take off the outers just for this purpose. I figured someone who has blown up a ujoint and taken out an ear, swapped a hub kit, or swapped to 297/760 shafts has a set lying around taking up space...

Figure shipping from 73135 and I'll send you a couple that I didn't leave on the trail.

Chris,

Just remember to drain your front diff if you do that...... could get real messy if you turn hard enough or park on a side angle. Remove the front drive shaft too......

Hey, just remembered..... I have several 260 spare shafts laying around you could use until you get the swap done. My rig is outta commission for a while so I don't need 'em for trail spares.

PM me.
