D30 Aussie locker install

Re: D30 Aussie locker install.

This how-to is so beautiful, it is worth popping to the top to keep it alive.

The CanMan did an awesome job.

Re: D30 Aussie locker install.

I currently have ARB in the rear of my 1999 XJ, and I am trying to decide if I should go with Aussie or ARB in the front. This writeup has made it very clear how easy the install would be and I feel I could handle it. I still have to decide if I want arb in the front or not... Any one with Aussie lockers in the front have any issues I should know about?

front ARB = $600 total including install (used)
Aussie self install = 250? (new)

so any one with aussie have any issues on road or wish they had done arb?

sorry if I am !!!1but I have to make a choice soon.

Sorry to bring up a dead thread, but I just have a question. Is it absolutely necessary to use new ring gear bolts? Im just wondering as I have a lockrite on the way.

I'm bringing up this thread too since nobody answered this when MoparManiac asked it.

Is it necessary to use new ring gear bolts? Don't really care either way, just want to know why.

Also, has anybody had to replace their thrust washers during an aussie/lock-right/ez-lock install on the D30? I mean, can they wear out, it's a washer. Just wondering if I should go ahead an buy some for the install to be prepared. I didn't think thrust washers could really "wear out". That would mean they would flatten out. My XJ is an '87, that's why I'm wondering if I should buy new thrust washers or not.

Thanks guys!

It probably isnt really necessary, but only if they'd only been torqued down once before. Since the install, ive torqued plenty of different used ring gear bolts back down to spec and havent had one fail. Clean the threads on the ring gear good, the bolts good too, and use red or green lock tite. New ones are not streached and would provide a more accurate torque reading. If you are at all worried about it, torque the ring gear bolts down 5 more ft lbs than called for, it will hurt nothing.

When I measured my old 200k plus mile and the new side gear washers/spacers, there was a very small difference, less than .003 IIRC, maybe a shade more or less, dont remember. Ive installed quite a few lockrights and aussies since, ive reused the side gear washers/spacers and the gap comes out within spec. I would just reuse them. New side gear washers/spacers are not very spendy, and if you feel the need to get them, it wouldnt hurt either way.

Re: D30 Aussie locker install.

I hate to bring an old thread alive again, But if there was one to bring back, this would be a good one.

My question is, I seem to remember doing a ring gear removal some 20 years ago. The thing was, they were LEFT handed threads, but you made no mention of that in your thread. Can I assume they right handed? Maybe I was smoking too much dope back then & can't even remember what I was working on. It may have been a big rig maybe.

Re: D30 Aussie locker install.

Some are right, some are left. The D30 happens to be right hand thread.
Thanks for the fast answer bro, the last thing I wanted to do is snap a bolt off in the carrier. Great thread by the way.

Gonna do a Lock right this week, but the install is pretty much the same as your write up. Good pic's & info

Is it possible to do this install without removing the carrier? I'm thinking that upgraded ring gear size makes this necessary, right? Is it necessary with stock gear ratio?

My not be but it would be a PITA to get that roll pin out.

Its like 12 more bolts to get the carrier out...go for it :).

but if you take out the carrier, doesn't that mean you have to adjust for your backlash? sorry guys im trying to get the install stuff straight.

Also, with regard to using this locker offroad, do i have to switch to 2wd to get it to disengage so i can turn? Or can i just press in the clutch and wiggle the steering wheel a little? The reason i ask is driving in 2wd really isnt an option for me offroad seeing that i pretty much gotta use 4 low because mine is a manual

yeah i know its auto, but im saying i always use 4low offroad, i cant use 2 wheel drive because it doesnt have low gear, and mines a stick so offroad i dont wanna just be sittin there toastin my clutch all day, but then if i need to turn, people say just put it in 2 wheel drive but i cant do that, soooooo can i just use some clutch to get it to disengage? i understand its automatic, but you can still use creative techniques to manipulate how it works
