Cylinder head questions

You really don't want to... the 2000/2001 heads are known for cracking at 60-75 thousand miles.

Exhaust/intake ports are also different shapes/sizes so the 90 manifolds may or may not line up well, I'm not sure.

Can I put a 2001 head on a 90 block? Whats not compatible?

I had a 99 block and head I swapped into my 89....the port shapes on the intake side did not match, but everything bolted up just fine...I was worried the mismatched ports would screw everything up, but I ran it for over 30, 000 miles that way and it ran just fine, no issues at all...it is perfect? no, it's not...but, will it work? yes. I felt a bit more power, no noticable difference in milage, and no overheating issues...

IIRC, you'll want to match the intake/exhaust gasket to the manifolds you are using to avoid vacuum leaks.

It's not so much matching the intake ports on the head to the manifold that's important, although I've done it on my wife's XJ. What's important is to use the intake/exhaust gasket for whatever intake manifold you're using to provide good sealing.

Well I was changing the thermostat and noticed the insides of my head look pretty sketchy, 177,000 miles will do that, and I've came across a 2001 intake manifold as well as a newer model exhaust manifold. So I figured Id ask.

What I really want is that head hesco makes. That thing is awesome! :guitar:

Renix heads and intake manifolds have bigger intake ports, so putting a newer head and still using the renix intake manifold will work, but will not be optimal, cause some of the air coming in will hit the side of the head and create turbulence(renix ports are 1/4" lower on the bottom). I'd say it'd be better to use a newer intake manifold on a renix head than to use the renix intake manifold on a newer head. The renix(2686), 7120, and 0630 exhaust manifolds are bigger than the 00-01s/0331's exhaust ports, so using an 00+ 0331 will work, but as warned before, many of the 00 and 01 0331s crack. Do not use an older head on a block that came with an 0331 unless you plan on using an older/made for an older 4.0 exhaust manifold as well cause the exhaust ports on the 0331 are smaller than the renix, 7120s, and 0630s, thus the 0331 exhaust manifolds will not cover the bigger ports of the renix, 7120s, and 0630s.

ain't that what I said?

I'll be heading to S.C.W. in a few weeks and THAT's a truely unfair advantage!! I love the first couple days when I'm up and moving around 03:00 and everyone else is just getting to sleep!

The 01 has tinnny poop ports . That do flow well to stock red line but if your trying to make a go faster I would look for a HO head.

How well would the 99+ intake match up to a 93 head?, I take it you would need the 99+ gasket as well.

Well, the switch to the 99+ intake was at the start of 99 iirc, and the 0331 head switch was 99.5 or 00, so unless there are two different 99+ intakes (I would have to check the part numbers, will try to remember to do that later) the factory was putting those manifolds on the older heads for a while. I'd bet on it being fine.

Probably will be fine. If they use the same intake/exhaust gasket, you're good to go. If they don't, go to the parts store and ask to see each gasket and do a little comparing.

Sooo should i try it? New head on 90 block? Or just leave it and put new e manifold and intake on the old?

Also I need help on removing my a/c. I know theres gotta be a thread on here somewhere.

And another I want to put my battery inside. Like a hummvee, but not under the seat.
