Custom yoke style SYE for the 242 or 231 done.

From a good start, this thread has proved useless. A no name oddball yoke that noone can Identify including the OP. Might as well be deleted. GoJeep has done all the work on this, the op might as well piss in the wind here.

USELESS!!

alright, i had napa get me a seal, SKF (chicago rawhide) P/N 14972

OD: 2.332"
Shaft: 1.5"
Bore: 3.238"
Was just looking into this and came up with a very similar one to that.

Just check yours is a double lip seal like this.
You can use this site to learn about the different seal lips and materials.

I am glad you even questioned yourself as I have no idea what you are talking about?? How could this thread be useless when I give different places to buy the yoke needed in my write up and it has been working perfectly for me for years proving it is a working concept?
Look at when this thread started and that was the year after I installed it to make sure it had no long term effects.

Since Marcus is the OP, I'm not sure what the hell you're getting at.

I've also done this modification with the no name yoke and the no name seal and the no name seal retainer and it's been working for me for over 2 years.

You can't expect that things like this are going to be perfect and will lay it out for you in a kit format. Go to RE and buy one if you can't handle the research and effort required. Sheesh.

Looks, like yours is the better choice, here is the one I called about-

http://www.skfextranet.com/catalogs/457010/sealdetail.asp?s=14972

The CRWA5 seal in the one you linked (PN14977) is better for lubrication retention, and the one I found is better for grease retention.

Here's SKF's seal handbook:

http://www2.chicago-rawhide.com/PDF/2005 the seal-small & large diameter.pdf

I'll go to NAPA tomorrow and ask about the 14977 and see if they have one in stock to compare it to the 14972

It's NAPA PN 14972, says so on my receipt. They didn't have 14977 in stock, won't have it til monday. If that one isn't good I can pick the other on up then, but I won't be able to do the SYE til wednesday the earliest when my RE stuff and yoke come in.

Marcus I apologize, I had subscribed to both threads this one and the other with the gentleman who found his yoke at a drivetrain shop and while started out as a great thread was not able to provide any info on the vehicle it came out of. I can't remember his name but he used grade 3 threaded rod instead of a bolt to hold the yoke on.
That is my careless mistake and I meant no harm Marcus, believe me you are the god as far as I'm concerned for the xj and your work is nothing but fully researched and accurate. My deepest regrets to Marcus for the mistake on my part.
Btw Marcus I know your country has had a brutal season over there and I hope none of your family has been harmed in the terrible weather and resulting problems. Take care sir.

No worries mate at all. Thought it was strange statement coming from you so suspected that may have been the case. ;)
Thanks for asking about the fires that took the lives of 210 so far. We were around 10 miles from the closest it got from two different directions so were fine. My in-laws were in the middle of the worse hit area for loss of life and houses razed but were one of the lucky ones to make it through after fighting ember attack for 48 hrs straight. Houses all around them burned but theirs was saved.

Happy to hear, what an experience! All the best.

has anyone run the housing that is on gojeeps page that eric salsman made/makes? i really dont wanna spend a fortune on the hack and tap kit from re ust to get stuff that will comlpicate the install anyway. i like the fact that he made it to use a stock seal.

I know he has sold quite a few now but as I have not tried it myself, so can't comment on it. Can't see why it should not work perfectly.

Great information..bump worthy!

I just did this on my 98 w/ a 242 last weekend and its working perfectly so far!
