Custom roof rack gutter mounts

I'm designing a low profile roof rack, and I'm curious as to what mounts everyone uses. Do you custom make them or do you use Surco or something else?

Most custom rack's I have seen have used an assortment of "off the shelf" type gutter mounts.

I have seen a few home built but not very many. I suspect that unless you want something specific that you can't find it is probably just as easy to use something already available.

I'm actually partial to the ones we make here at work for our XJ racks, but there's enough labor into them that they make up half the cost of the rack, so they are significantly more expensive than all the others out there, so no one is ever crazy enough to buy just the mounts.

The gutter mounts seem to be the most secure and stout, racer32 made some simple and stout gutter mounts, He's got a thread on the build too. JCR's new low profile rack looks nice and I'm sure it's quality but after looking at it for a while it doesn't seem very functional, it's just a light bar and four pieces of DOM table top if you will. The runners are spaced far apart and it just doesn't seem like it would be easy to strap/mount gear to. Just my .02

Are those the warrior ones on your webpage?

We had plans in the works for one with a floor and such. Initial interest seemed to be a spot for a tire, hi-lift, and lights. It appears that interest is gone though.

I dunno, I like the rack...but, I think if you redesigned so the side tubes came out further olympic top hat style to offer side protection up high, and attach to the gutter at more like 4 spots, and the contact surface much wider on each mount point, it'd be a choice piece. I think I'd probably run one.

Lemme know if you want me to test one ;)

If you did a floor cover that would enable you to put any size item up there and bungie it down that would change eveything about the racks functionality, you know? leave everything as it is and just put a piece of mesh on it, cut to fit the contours, tack it on and BAM! also, if you did that it would strengthen the sructure by tying everything together and you could use less expensive tubing and maybe it wouldn't cost $530 shipped, ouch! Just my .02

Concur, except it'd be ok to have an option to mount in place of the factory rack on vehicles that had come equipped with one instead of gutter mounting...and I'm never going to run a roof rack again.

Maybe Farm Boy Designs would sell their design to someone?

Concur if you will. Dumb.

Why not just copy everyone else.

Please, dear lord, tell me, that you and Peter Kewiet share the same thinking.

You guys completely lack any original thinking of any kind.

Axe this forum, it hurts my eyes.

Thanks!

Hey for the record, I'm not saying copy anyone. Personally I find that really irritating especially dealing with it at work. I just suggested the current design be wider to offer side/roofline protection and that the attachment points be wider and increased in numbers, but I think the overall design of the rack looks great. I mentioned the Olympic Top Hat to show rough comparison to my idea on being wider.

Something like that JCR would work great for me, if I could figure out how to get it up there and get my lightbar on it too.

Yep. You were talking about roof line protection & mentioned the Olympic "Top Hat" rack that would bend if you looked at it funny. This one is the rack I used to build for retail & offeres the low profile that was mentioned along with the roof protection. Just offering up some pics to give people ideas...

The square tube is crossing the top of the side rails. The pic shows how low pro the rack is. I built a couple of the racks without the side rails which were ultra low pro. The rack with the side rails sat less than 6" above the roof & without the rails sat less than 2" above the roof.

This is how they mounted. I replaced the stock mounts with 5/16" steel nutserts in the stock rack holes. There are 6 per side. This gave the rack 12 mounting bolts.

Olympic bending if you look at it funny? I've seen people do rollover recoveries from the top hat and it didn't budge. The WA guys in my area swear by them.

Your rack really isn't my style, I don't want a cargo basket on it at all, really I wouldnt even put a tire on my roof, and I'd prefer to keep it gutter mount.

Honestly I really like the JCR overall look just as it is. I'd just like it to be a little wider, and have more/wider attachment points.

In the end, I will probably do something custom, because I'm trying to figure a way to get it to hold some rally lights, and hold my lightbar still too. Oh and I'd probably mount a couple of my antennas to it too.

And by lightbar I mean
