So i bought a book called "High Performance JEEP CHEROKEE XJ Builder's Guide 1984-2001" and i'm almost done reading it but i have a question. I know people make custom lifts, skids, bumpers, etc... but has anyone wade there own trac-bars and steering kits? Like a true crossover or high steer kit. I realize there would be alot of fabrication involved but is it not worth the hassel to say use a thick wall DOM tubing and tap it to recieve say 1-ton tie rod ends then flip it ontop of the mounts. Then make a mount for the drag link and a trac-bar so they run parallel to each other? just want someones input who may have done it.

Hundreds have done it. Many different ways to do it, narrow it down a little and you can get some descriptions. What are you after?

What i'm after, lets see. I want high steer and true crossover steering.

Well, you can't get really get high steer, but you can mount the steering on top of the knuckles. Also, you can't get true crossover steering unless you use an aftermarket Tera knuckle or WJ knuckles.

It's easier to build your own steering setup if you use rod ends, rather than TRE's, since you just drill out the knuckle for the bolt rather than have to reverse the taper on the knuckle. It's also simple to get .250 or .281 wall DOM tubing that's 11/16" ID so you can tap it to 3/4-16 thread for 3/4" rod ends.

There are also a place or two that sell an OTK setup with inserts and stuff, if you asked about OTK steering in the Mod-tech forum or if you did a quick search, you'd come up with info about that.

Personally, I like inverted Y the best for OTK steering on the stock D30 knuckles, rather than crossover. It's very simple to build.
