The problem I have found with that style, you cant get a good grip on the E-brake. With the tiny parking drums of a disk brake upgrade, one needs a good yank to get the vehicle to stay put on any steep grade.

I have the 97+ installed in my 89. I can take a pic if you like. Was easy. Cupholders are amazing. I actually use one for my phone/media player right now. I have not done anything with the e-brake handle other than bending it slightly to the driver side to make it function correctly.. without modifying the console.
I know IslanderOffroad grinded a bit off the console hole to have the older lever work.
I do have the later model handle.. Will wait til I do my rear brakes before swapping new one.
