Cracked Crossmember

I just sold my 92, and picked up a 98. I knew that there were a few things wrong with it when I bought it, including a cracked crossmember. I picked up a new one from Yellaheep and he asked me to post some pictures of the broken piece.

How come you didn't just gusset/weld?
That's a lot of work for some tweaked sheet metal. Those are cheap and plentiful here. It would be easier to reinforce a straight one...if it's worth the effort.

That's a pretty healthy hit. Have you posted these in the tech sections? I wonder how many look worse and are still intact.

I haven't posted it in the tech section yet. Maybe I'll do that tomorrow as I'm out of time this evening.

I didn't weld it for two reasons. I don't have a welder or know how to weld, and I got a new one for $20, so it wouldn't have been worth it even if I could weld.

When Justin said he needed a new crossmember because his was "cracked", I didn't believe it was exactly that - cracked. I've never seen one like the one under his rig. When he came by, I didn't see that impact mark, but that helps explain what may have caused it. But it is weird - it's such a fine line crack - almost like it was really cold when it happened and it cracked with a "pop", rather than metal failure from fatigue.
