Cooling Issue

My Xj stays between 185-186.8 F driving normally. However when I hit the trails and I'm in 4 lo sometimes I get as high as 230 F and if I turn my vehicle off it doesn't like to start up. Someone suggested a different fan from a Ford Taurus, another suggested hood loovers. Both good ideas but idk not totally convinced. Looking for some other thoughts on what best to cool my xj when I Am on the trails. I almost wanted to do another electric fan that I can even keep on after the vehicle is shut off Like a turbo timer.

It not starting after a hot run is a typical issue with the Cherokees called "Heat Soak"
There was a TSB for the late models where this problem is most common.
Heat soak leads to vapor lock. When the air/vaporized gasoline in the fuel rail clears, it runs normal again.

IF It gets too hot in the engine bay, "The Chrysler Fix" is to wrap the #3 injector.

If you want to confirm if you have heat soak--drive your vehicle until it is good and hot. Park, shut off the engine, and open the hood for about 30 minutes. Restart the engine. If the symptoms are gone, you have heat soak. The only fix is to reduce the under-hood temperature.

Most other manufacturers that encountered this problem simply added a timer circuit in the efan to allow it to run when the engine is off for a short time to reduce the under-hood temperature. Chryco--a cheap piece of insulation.

The heat soak issue for the 1999-01 XJ is due to a number of issues. Redesign of the fuel system eliminating the return line from the fuel rail was a start, followed by the redesign of the manifolds, and compounded on some XJs with the addition of the 50-state emissions package--two pre-cats in the exhaust manifold right under the injectors on the 00-01.

another change Chryco had was to change from Champion plugs to NGK plugs in the effected model years.

I would recommend you come up with a way to reduce your under-hood temperatures. You can go the route of hood vents (louvers, or Lebarron vents)
Or you can install an after-market timer to the efan circuit. Here is a link: http://www.at-fairfax.com/P1786-ELK-960.htm

I would also think about maybe swapping out your thermostat, and making sure you have proper coolant level, and that its not all water. You want a good 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water....You could also try a product called Water Wetter ...this stuff is supposed to improve the cooling properties of the fluids in your cooling system.

Good luck.[/QUOTE]

What year?Open or closed system in your jeep?Does the stock elec fan turn on? Does it run hot when just sitting in town at lights or bumper to bumper traffic?

I have heard of the heat soak before and I did Change the thermostat my coolant is decent I am running champion spark plugs. I think it is time for an upgraded fan. Thank you!!

2000 Cherokee sport 143 rounds Idk if its open or closed what do you mean by that? The stock fan does run and it only gets hot when I am on the trails and doesn't like to turn back on if I turn it off when I'm on the trails.

A stock rad does a great job when serviced. No need to spend big bucks on it.
What i mean by a open system is you can remove the cap on the radiator, as with a closed system you can not.
Just get your system serviced before you spend your hard earned money on something you may not need to spend it on. A GOOD shop will tell you what needs to be done.

i have a 2000 with the same issue. it is heat soak as mentioned above. i have done manny things to try to fix the problem w/o cutting my hood, or changing the intake to a pre 99. my next and final step was going to be either the e-fan timer.(probably the best/ez method) or to replace my mec fan with a tauris fan. the tauris fan has low and high. i was going to wire the low to the factory e-fan sircut, then simply wire the High to a toggle on switched power.

like i said, i have done alot to try to get rid of heatsoak. cut the hood, or e-fan timer is my vote!

Bronze.

p.s. leave the stock thermostat in there, your MPG's will suffer badly

OK so I am gonna get my radiator serviced and swap to a Taurus fan with an e timer, flush the coolant, add waterwetter. And Hopefully this will help me cool off on the trails. What year Taurus fan should I go with???

Thanks again y'all!!

Like Bronze, I have had every over heating or cooling problem you can have in a XJ. My .02..... Flush the system, maybe ever twice. You would be surprised what comes out, and how much better the system is afterwards. You can do it your self for $10. Second ( with out Just Empty Every Pocket ) swap the t-stat for a good one, I have learned the hard way you get what you pay for, I paid $14 for mine and its a fail safe. Then go for the fan clutch. I run only the clutch fan in mine, I have an electric fan that I control with a switch on the dash but never turn it on. After doing all this to mine it goes to 190 and stays there. So for $50 to $60 and a Saturday night in the shop it might fix your problems.

Awwww the beauty of the XJ, you keep trying until you either fix it or take her out back & shoot her

SPECFab can you better explain the Taurus fan scenario I told my buddy about that he helps me install all my new parts and he thinks I'm nuts is this the electric fan from the Taurus or the actual motor mounted fan does it just screw in there? Why a Taurus fan?

Thanks

i got my fan from a 94 taurus
