Convertible XJ project

It might be a little easier with a 2 door (2 less doors to work around). Also make sure to tie all the down tubes to the frame. One other thing is make sure you brace the "frame" between the front & rear axels.
It is a cool design you got going. Good luck.

Yeah it would be ALOT easier with a 2 door but i have a 4 door and want to see what i can do with it.
Thanks for the tips on the cage, im takin all the help i can get.

Just got back to school, so I now have access to a shop, tools, people that can weld, and lots of parts.
I said in the begining that this is going to be a long term project.
I almost have the hatch done (all the peices are cut out/up), will get pics up soon. Found 5 Xj's in a junk yard up here in san luis obispo (2 with D44's!!) so im not short on parts. I have to get some more drawings down and look up some more info on upgrades/swaps before i start cutting into the body.

Found these in a offroad/fourwheeler magazine, might come in handy while trying to make stuff semi-modular.

I FOUND MY DOORS!!!!
They were at a local junkyard, turns out the campus shop custodian tossed them without letting anybody know :smsoap: . I made a few phone calls :callme: and got them back for free!! Whoo Hoo!!!
Oh yeah , I finally put up some money to say thanks to NAXJA for all the help/info. it has/will give me.

Fiberglass part of hatch almost done, the glass and resin I ordered should be here by Tues. I should have it put together about a week from then.
Heres some picks for all you "gotta see it to belive it" people:

Retaining original locking mechanism so I can lock it with the same key and people wont steal my shit-

Without a doubt start with a good cage or else the body/top will move and flex making it tought to reassemble.

I hate u so much.....

J/K, Damn good job!! That storage space is genius!! Glad u got pics, gives me a little more insight on what it will look like.

You might want to reinforce and cap those "bedrails" that the quarter glass sits on top off or the next time you lean on it/ smash it into a rock, it will fawk with the top to body & door to body alignment.

Those pics of the tailgate one remind me of my old range rover. The main thing that would mess up with it was the lock would get really dirty just from driving then the liftgate wouldn't close right but other than that i loved it (at least the tail/liftgate part).

not to keep jumpin in on Islanders thread but made a bit of progress on closing up all the sheet metal gaps on my chop project.

Windshield frame done... the frame was closed with 16ga sheet and then bent a piece of 1/2" square tubing to act as a place for the top to seal against when it goes back on...

Cargo area...lockable compartments to be added inside... you can also see a bit of the steel fender flares

not exactly on topic but here are some pics of my extended wheel tubs, and wider steel flares...

Jump in as much as you want flexy, you're getting infintely more done than I am with basically the same project.
I've got some other more urgent front end problems to deal with, and its my DD (for now) so I cant fix it and do this project at the same time.

My project: DELAYED, untill front end shuts up.

Flexy's project: Doing F-ing great!

Wanted to give another update...

Sheetmetal for the body is done and currently sitting in a nice rattle can grey with no real immediate plans for good paint job, easier to fix trail damage this way.

Also finished up the mods to the rear bumper and slapped a couple coats of POR on it.

I also finished up the sheetmetal for the top and it fits back on quite nicely... having a exo/roof rack on the top definitely helped keep it from flexing, will post some pics of how it attaches and seals when I get a chance.

Beautiful Job flexy, makes me want to cut into mine right now, but I have to drive it to class tomorow.
