Convertible XJ project

It's one of the guys from Rocky Mountain Extreme. It's a Toyota Truck short bed tonneau cover. He had to trim it a little bit to fit over the edge, but that's it.

to seal and latch them go to the junk yard and get the T tops out of another car and cut the roof area out around the T tops from the car you are steeling the tops from and weld the inserts in and addapt them to the XJ, just make it work. thats how every thing is done the first time

Hmmmm......
Tonneau cover + slight modification = SOFT TOP!
I like the idea of being able to keep the rain gutters.
Going to check into this, will get back to you guys. :compwork:

why not get a MJ chop out back of the cab and make the 4runner 'esque vehicle Jeep should have added to the line up but never did. Get an after market convertible full top for the MJ bed, and with the rear cab cut out, put a seat back there a roll bar or exo cage, and my other idea was if you got some time and skillz, fab in the cab window into the fold down bed door, and make it like a 90's broco or any 4 runner, and that way you can have a nice clean clear glass rear window. Thats what i hate about soft tops here in michigan is the scratched plastic rear window. I need nice clean defrosted rear glass, for the spring fall and winter. Or just buy a 1st gen 4runner.

Don't have an MJ, and that would be too easy. Well not easy... but easier...

About the window, the way the defrost wire things are on the glass I dont think you could make it roll down or anything just cause of the way its wired, not to mention that there is nothing to mount the glass to like that.

I live in California, not to worried about having the soft top on too much really just for rain and wind mainly.

Yay Look What I Did!! Ok well almost did...

Thats What the final working plan has come down to.
I Cut down the fiberglass hatch down to what I'm gonna use.
So far its the very bottom 3-inches with the lock mount in it.
Everything above a line between the top of the taillights.
And the little overhang thing above the licenceplate mount.
Bottom part is gonna be made outta lightweight square tubing and sheetmetal cover.

Will post up pix as soon as I can borrow a camera, Sorry. Just thought I update stuff.

First-
THIS PROJECT HAS NOT BEEN SCARPPED!!!
....just delayed

Second-

Good news:
I almost have the hatch all worked out. Need to get some fiberglass and resin to finish it off and make it clean. Will get pix as soon as I get back to school in a few weeks. And no, the tire carrier isnt done, I need to work the bugs out on paper first because of my very limited budget. Will post up some drawings first chance I can find a scanner, I have been drawing them by hand.

Bad news:
Somebody stole my doors from the shop and I will have to find and the trade for/buy them and start over again with those.

It might be a little easier with a 2 door (2 less doors to work around). Also make sure to tie all the down tubes to the frame. One other thing is make sure you brace the "frame" between the front & rear axels.
