Contacts verses glasses.

Standard, bi or tri-focal?

Standard.
This last visit the doctor mentioned that I may start considering bi focals or progressive lens but Im resisting that. Its bad enough that my perscription includes magnification which makes me look bug eyed and bothers me in sunlight.

I wear glasses and I have contacts but I rarely use them. Glasses are super easy to put on and take off and contacts also have a lot of maintenance requirements that make them more difficult to own. The only time I wear contacts is when I'm doing some kind of outdoor activity where the benefits of contacts outweigh the trouble of having them, namely golf and skiing. For off-road play I use the glasses because I don't want to lose a contact or get crap in my eyes.

I've thought about Lasik, but they say that while it will fix my near sightedness that I will also NEED to have glasses for computer work. Since 99% of my time is on the computer it seems really dumb to pay for surgery that will make me NEED glasses.

I have a severe astigmatism, and I cannot get used to contacts. Every time I blink, the contact shifts slightly and everything goes out and back in focus. I don't mind my glasses at all, as several have stated they do provide basic eye protection, and I'm so used to seeing myself with them, I feel really strange without them.

hmmm...

At one point I had +7 and +7.5 diopters

I used contacts for a long time, first hard contacts, then soft
about 15 years ago got lasik

A few years later I got a bit of astigmatism and I have to wear glasses to read, I still can go with no glasses when exercising or working on the cars

I'm not going back to contacts again

I hate the hassle of cleaning them , having to buy the fluids to keep them at night, it's literally a pain if something gets in your eye, I have forgotten I'm wearing them and jumped in a pool ... I have lost a few, wrecked a few, got eye infections, anyway .. no thanks.

Went in today and got "fitted" for my contacts. They arent the extended wear ones yet. The doctor recommended that my first pair be just regular soft lenses and if I liked them and they liked me, I could get extended wear later.
I put them in and took them out a couple times at the doctors. I thought the problem would be that I wouldnt be able to stick my finger in my eye. So I told myself "its only a thing, just do it" so I did. I had my fingers all up in my eyes. It sucked and was uncomfortable but it can be done. One of them went right in, the other eye I had trouble getting the contact to let go of my finger. I would get it on my eyeball but as soon as I pulled my finger out, the contact would go with it. Finally I got both in there. Taking them out is a piece of cake compared to putting them in.
I dont know if I want to go though that crap every day though. Glasses arent any fun to wear but they're sure as hell easier to put on and take off.

I've been wearing contacts for 6 years and only wore glasses for one year before that. Wearing glasses and catching durring a baceball game is next to impossible. I tried it in practice once and my glasses went flying allong with the catchers mask and I almost broke them. I must have a dozen pair of these saftey glasses laying around (work, home and in the jeep), so far no issues with chips or dirt in my eye, and i'm a machinist. For me, going back to glasses and trying to drive is difficult because of the loss of peripheral vision.

Contacts will definatly get easier, I have no problem removing or putting them in with no mirror. Like everybody else said make sure your hands are clean and don't skimp on the soloution. Opti-free is the only major brand that has not been recalled for contamination yet and its what I use. Even though you don't have the extended wear ones (either do I) my doc told me they can stay in for a day or two with out much of an issue. I asked because at the time I did alot of camping, his responce was that if I couldnt get my hands clean then don't touch the contacts.

Contacts aren't for everyone, so if you try them for a bit and can't stand them, don't worry. My Ex couldn't wear them. She tried them, and they kept gumming up even though she cleaned them daily. They itched, they burned, so She 86'd them rather than deal with the discomfort.

Glasses, even if they are not polycarbinate, are better than no protection. They do very well against tree branches, and other nasty things.

I don't get the peripheral vision argument. The part of the eye which allows you peripheral vision is not very exact and only good for catching motion. Unless the frames are bulky, there shouldn't be much of a problem there.

Yeah like i said before, it probably takes me about 30 seconds to put my contacts in, in the morning. Youll get good at it.

They way i do it is i put the contact over my pupil and "move it around" so to say, till i see it sits on the curve of my eye. Then a quick 360 eye rotation and i close my eye.

Works everytime.

Good luck with them.

Do you have vision coverage?

I get a new pair every year with my plan, no charge.

I thought about going contacts but since I work in a dusty environment my eye doc didn't recommend them. I want lasik but don't want to pay for it.

Ive been wearing glasses for about 8 or 9 years. Im used to the bit of peripheral vision that I may have lost. I do recall that when I started wearing glasses, it was a bit of a problem, mainly when driving. I drive for a living and I do have to take special care when entering the interstate from some ramps and so forth. Thats not the reason I'd like to lose the glasses though. I hate that I constantly have to clean them. Working on the car (Jeep) or kayaking or even mowing the grass gets to be a PITA when sweat (or rain or river water) gets on them. Ive started wearing hats (even though I hate them) just to contain the sweat. I suspect I wont wear the contacts all the time, I'll probably switch back and forth as the circumstances dictate. I also miss wearing sunglasses. Ive all but given up finding a pair that works well with glasses. My new glasses I got have magnetic sunglass frames that just "click" onto the perscription frames. Should be pretty cool.

if you go for contacts you could always get some of these:

No vision coverage right now.
I will probably get lasik at some point in the future. My eyes are getting worse slowly. I went 8-9years on my last perscription but that was probably about 4 years too long. I think I'll wait till Im alittle older. I would hate to get lasik and then ten years down the road need glasses again and still be relatively young.

My optometrist had a list similar to that in her office. I was considering something wacky, maybe some day but not today.

:D i had a buddy that used to wear the cat eye ones every day. he said in low light when your pupil opens up wide they really intrude on your vision. pretty nifty tho. i think i would wear one red one and one of the X ones. might get a few odd looks at the grocery store

All those options, and they don't have the ones I really want...

Either something like a flat black - over the front of the eye, or a one-way mirror (outwards, natch) over the front of the eye. I like those ideas - especially the mirror one.
there was a comedian awhile back.. cant remember his name... anyways he said if he ever needed to get a glass eye he would have it made clear with a picture of himself inside screaming and banging on the glass trying to get out. i though that was a good idea :D
