Working on the in-laws PII Win98 Micron Millennia. I need to get rid of the toolbar below the Address bar - the one that says "Remove Toolbar." Believe me, that does not remove the toolbar
I've run SpyWareBot and manually removed everything it reported. It now reports '0' Parasites.
I think the toolbar is associated with Netster. I've searched for procedures to remove this toolbar but have not had any luck.
Should've mentioned in post#1 - there is no 'Manage Add-Ons" on the Tools menu (ver 5.50.4522.1800). Either there wasn't or somebody hacked it. I may try upgrading IE, but I would like to get rid of the toolbar first.
I'd strip it out entirely if A) I didn't have to use it at microsoft.com (they don't like FireFox,) and B) it could be easily removed from Win2000 and later...
But, I don't get much use out of MSIE - for that very reason.
I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure '98 does not support Explorer 7 ;-)
Not sure what you mean about paying--SpyBot S&D and AdAware are free. I would also try the new (also free) AVG anti-spyware program. If these automated tools don't work, try HijackThis! (do be careful, though, as it can screw up Windows if you remove the wrong item(s)).
With all due respect, this might be a good time for them to consider a move up to a more current computer/operating system.
And a better browser. Download FireFox (it's also free...) and delete all MSIE desktop shortcuts. Keep one hidden for support reasons, and make FireFox the default.
The only browser I've run into more trouble with than MSIE was whatever they bundle into AOHell - I won't support computers that run AOHell anymore. You sign up for AOHell, you're on your own.

All I know is when I followed Jefb's links they asked for payment. I probably missed something. I'll check again.
I've been to hijackthis! before for a different machine. It worked, but that's a lot of work.
This is their late son's machine. They never would have bought one if not for him. All my MIL does is look up recipes. My FIL uses the scanner/printer to duplicate cabinet plans. They're not heavy users and anything that costs is out of bounds.

For the former, make it a condition of continued support for the machine. That's how I handled my nieces - I fixed their computer, and told them if they brought it to me again, and I found AOL on it, they were doing it on their own, or paying my shop rates to get it done ($75/hour.)
They quit using AOL, and went to a normal dialup provider. AOL was being sticky about letting them quit, so I talked to them, and that saw to that.
I told my nieces and my brother-in-law that, if they wanted me to continue supporting their computer, they would have to run the software I told them to, and tell me when they installed anything so I could keep track of what's going on. So far, so good - I haven't gotten anywhere near the "tech calls" from them that I did initially...
The old "carrot and stick" approach usually works, and it's all for the best. Oh - if you reinstall, I can now speak favourably about both AVG Antivirus and AVG Antispyware - and they can both be had for free. I've been running them for a few months now, and I've not had any trouble...
