Colorado B/S Thread

Re: The Colorado BS thread

are the aftermarket steering kits such as the one frankz sells, and DIY kits like ballistic, and ruffstuff's street legal? i was wanting to get one, but my dad isnt wanting to let me do it because he's afraid if my welds broke (he's seen, and knows im more than capable) and i wrecked and killed someone they would sue him.

Re: The Colorado BS thread

don't go ballistic... they are known for not shipping things.

Can't answer the other question. A bunch of the guys I know went another route and drilled out + tapped the DOM tubing itself so that the heim screws directly into the end. As long as you use safety washers on the heims and cotter pins on the bolts with that setup it is actually safer than stock, because even if the heims separate the safety washers keep them connected, unlike a TRE.

The "altered suspension" law was repealed a few years ago. Not a whole lot covering modified components...... but there's always the "open for interpretation" exception.

Re: The Colorado BS thread

doesn't matter what you do - if you are at fault in an accident, you're sued by some scumbag shyster ;) The good news is, as good as accident reconstruction can be, its pretty tough to tell if your steering welds failed and caused an accident, or if an accident occurred and in the process your steering welds failed. Burden of proof can be a bitch in proving causation.

I'm in no way advocating cruising in an unsafe vehicle just because you might get away with it in an accident -- life is too precious for that (yours and everyone elses). But with the exception of Rusty's, and that hooky IRO adjustable UCA contraption, most aftermarket kits are professionally made from materials better than stock. I wouldn't lose any sleep over one (I have a FrankZ draglink on my WJ, FWIW). Plus, the guys making this stuff know that if YOU get sued for an accident, the first party their shyster is going at for recovery is the mfg... motivation to overbuild!

Re: The Colorado BS thread

and that hooky IRO adjustable UCA contraption
just don't say that in Mod Tech, where we check our brains at the door. :dunno:

Re: The Colorado BS thread

I dunno what the hell people get to thinking sometimes....... I was out on HWY 93 earlier tonight before work.... wind was gusting pretty good..... some goober was hauling all his camping/hunting goodies behind one truck and it looked soooo dangerous......

This is damn near the exact truck, lift and all:

From his receiver hitch, he was pulling this sort of trailer with a pintle:

EAGERBEAVERTRAILER.jpg

On that trailer he had a tandem axle enclosed trailer and a side-by-side Razor type ATV:

And connected to the first trailer, he had hitched another toy-hauler camper trailer (which I can only assume was loaded with toys) like this:

He was doing 60+mph and snaking all over the highway due to the wind.....

Are you f-ing kidding me........

Re: The Colorado BS thread

Well to go along with your story Troy, here is what i did today. :D

749caf6a.jpg

HEMMT Wrecker: 51,000ish lbs
4 axle 60T capacity Lowboy trailer: 24,000ish lbs
Freightliner Classic w/ 500hp CAT 3406, Eaton 13Spd, and extra long frame with TAG axle: 18,000ish lbs

Estimated total weight of 93,000lbs (we're going to scale it tomorrow just to see for sure) divided up between 8 axles (6 of them duals) putzing up and down I-70 from the Colfax Exit to Idaho Springs and back for steep grade familiarization. I managed to do it no problem without missing a gear or even causing my soon to retire CW4 to shit himself. :D The other "trainee" did good too, although pulling onto I-70 from Colfax (making a right hand turn onto I-70W) he did apparently find a stop sign that I couldn't see. :D He tried shift up a hole before the truck had enough road speed and couldn't get it in, had to come to a complete stop on the on ramp and start over. No other incidents though and a good long day of driving. We got to the at 9am and got back at 5pm, nothing like an 8hr day on your day off.

Oh, and fun fact. That 4th axle on the trailer definitely doesn't track through the turns with you, is just gets slid around the corners from side to side.

Well we scaled it this morning and it was a bit heavier than we thought. Minus the Co-driver and about 500lbs of diesel it was 99,580lbs. I'll post up a pic of the scale ticket tonight.

Re: The Colorado BS thread

Giving a lot of thought to moving ,i want to go back to the SanDiego area ,and live near the beach,I'm not a fan of snow ,and being at sea level would mean i can get by without a o2 bottle .I will sell or trade my wj for a good used something that is in decent shape .

Re: The Colorado BS thread

We'd miss ya, Jim, but I have to admit beach and easy breathing are likely pretty attractive, not to mention the soccer moms on the beach while you're kicking back and breathing easy...

Re: The Colorado BS thread

X2...... We'd miss ya buddy.

The 5 days I spent down in Naples, FL sure had me enjoying life. Definitely better air and beautiful down there.

Get a big apartment with a hide-a-bed couch so we can drop in for a visit and free-load off ya for a few days....... :D

Re: The Colorado BS thread

yeah, and make sure your fridge is stocked with good beer for us, none of that Corona crap ;)

Re: The Colorado BS thread

Just Mike, but I'm not sure you want to trade for a Jimmy!

Here's the ticket from the scale

We'll miss you Jim. Try and move somewhere near Johnson Valley do I can crash at your place during the King of the Hammers race. :)

Re: The Colorado BS thread

Jim, how soon are you thinking of moving? It will be sad to see you go but I totally would understand, quality of life is important! Remember, it will be alot easier to move out of your current place by throwing everything off the balcony. I would be there to help!
