Re: The Colorado BS thread

Took a Risk Management class today and learned something:

The Zinc dichromate coating that's found on Grade 8 bolts will kill you pretty quickly if it's vaporized while welding. It creates a chemical reaction that increases your liver enzymes and the body is unable to filter it out for the rest of your life.

OSHA recommends:

SnoBowl toilet cleaner to take off the coating, grind, wash, then weld with a new respirator.

Now you know.

Always pregrind and then mix the dust with protein powder and cocaine and snort, best breakfast you will ever have.

I knew I liked you. You could brand your own version of Bath Salts - you could call it "The David." Drug Addicts everywhere would shit bricks.

Re: The Colorado BS thread

cripes... you know how many G8 bolts I've (all of us) welded over the years ...

Yep, me too man. It's pretty gnarly stuff.

Whole chapter of the class was called "Know your Coatings" and they were pretty bullish on welding safety. Thought I'd pass that along. Makes you think, huh?

It's only dangerous if your weak, if your tough then the fumes merely tickle your nose hair.

Oh. Well, cool then.

you and me both :scared:

I knew about zinc poisoning but forgot all about the chromate part... will have to keep that in mind when welding in the future.

Re: The Colorado BS thread

Lately if I want to weld in a bolt (or nut) I just weld in a grade 5 - From what I had read, as soon as the bolt gets heated to the welding temp most of the case hardening that make a bolt grade 8 is gone, so going to a grade 5 loses little. I could be wrong though.

Re: The Colorado BS thread

AFAIK you're right, I just generally use grade 8 because I barely ever buy anything else. I'll need to consider that in the future, or buy a respirator that fits under my helmet.

Grade 5s are still either zinc or zinc chromate (zinc chromate is blueish silver, zinc dichromate is gold) plated, so you're still dealing with metal fume fever and/or chromate liver toxicity. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

I do like the look of the phosphate/oil "black oxide" coatings, also. IIRC that's the same one they use on hex socket cap screws commonly used in machine tools/equipment, which I believe are just as strong as a grade 8.

Re: The Colorado BS thread

SB is right though, the heat of welding makes G8 bolts extremely brittle. I went through several I had used as a shock mount on the XJ that just snapped. Grade 5 fared much better in the shear type application.

either way, I'm a touch freaked out on the amount of fumes I may have sucked in from those bad boys over the years... oh well, nothing to do about it now but not increase the exposure!

Who cares, it's too late to change what you've done and quite frankly OSHA over exaggerates the likely hood if your death. Biggest thing is common sense, you shouldn't be sucking in welding fumes regardless. That's why you don't put your head directly over the weld and why you weld in a ventilated area.

Next you guys are going to start fretting about cancer from all the direct sunlight you've been exposed too.
