Colorado B/S Thread

Re: The Colorado BS thread

I take coors and bullitt for what ails me...

Re: The Colorado BS thread

Doctors gave me a new drug until the ortho surgeon can see me and figure out what they want to do/try next. Last night I took 2 Flexoralls, 2 Gambapentins and chased it with 2 beers. No decrease in pain at all. Just sitting still it's like someone has a hot knife in my vertebrae. When I move around it's like the knife is getting twisted. My pain tolerance is very high but I was almost in tears yesterday. I can't lift my head off the pillow. I gotta use a hand to push it up with my torso.

That sounds terrible. Was this caused by an acute injury or is it something degenerative over time?

My offer still stands to have my wife get you some free acupuncture treatments in Lone Tree.

Re: The Colorado BS thread

Chris, I'm sure you already did this, but: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gabapentin

I distrust virtually all pharmaceuticals... if they are not providing you pain relief, don't take them, they'll obviously do more harm than good. This the cervical issues you talked about before? Have you seen an acupuncturist?

Re: The Colorado BS thread

All I've heard so far is degenerative disc issue for the disc between C5 and C6. I did have a horrible accident on a trampoline about 5 years ago and I think that did something. It just seems to be getting worse as the years go on. I had a Cortisone injection a year ago and it felt 95% better but only lasted 9 months. I just had another one about 2 weeks ago and it didn't take at all. My primary doctor had 3 options for me the other day. Go for another injection, use drugs as pain management, or get a referral to an ortho. I chose 3 and some drugs to help get me through until I could get in because I felt like the first 2 were really just band aids. I've tried PT and Chiropractor but not acupuncture. I appreciate the standing offer Spots. At this point, I think I'm going to wait and see what the ortho says. I have a little more than a week before I go back to work at a new school district. I'm a little worried about still being in this pain when I go back.

Re: The Colorado BS thread

Life isn't fun when you're in pain 24/7. I used to be in so much pain with my shoulders and hip that I'd lash out at everyone including my wife. She's a saint for putting up with it for so long. I've got zippers on nearly every appendage so I know what you're going through. You're kind of a prisoner in your own body because you don't want to aggravate it.

I really encourage you to try acupuncture before surgery. I'm not saying 100% that it'll work for you, but it worked for me. And before I tried it, nothing worked for me including Oxy. Relying on pharmaceuticals is like putting a bandaid over a bullet wound. It wasn't until I realized that my Ortho ran out of ideas before I turned to acupuncture; and I thank God that I did. It saved my life.

My ROM is about 95% of where it was before I started falling apart. I have virtually no pain in my hips and I no longer have to rely on medications that were killing my organs.

I know it all sounds a bit Boulder granola, but I tried it - and I used to be a Republican. :)

Re: The Colorado BS thread

I tend to agree with Jim, Chris -- your ortho is likely going to tell you that acupuncture is witchcraft and a waste of your time and money, but our experiences with Sheila's cancer treatment was that a mix of eastern and western medicine is far better than the knives and pills alone. Acupuncture provided Sheila with pain/nausea relief from chemo that no pharmaceuticals could touch.

I used to be Boulder granola, and only briefly a Republican ;)

Re: The Colorado BS thread

Obviously I'm not a doctor but I think what's going on is that the disc is herniated. From what I can tell from limited research is that once it gets cracked, then the fluid inside begins to leak and the disc dries out. This can cause further cracking and shrinkage of the disc and it could cause a nerve to become pinched. This would certainly explain why I get incredible jolts of pain when doing certain things like tipping my head up to drink from a glass. Looks like the ultimate solution is surgery. I'm completely ignorant to acupuncture but it seems to me that it couldn't rejuvenate a damaged disc. Plus my insurance doesn't cover it.

Re: The Colorado BS thread

The ultimate solution likely is surgery, but the pain response might very well be managed and greatly reduced through acupuncture... Pain is a chemical/neural response, and acupuncture (through means I have absolutely no understanding of) can disrupt such responses and reduce pain. I've seen it with Sheila, I've experienced it myself, and when I was adjusting medical claims for progressive ins., I saw multiple clients experience pain relief when no traditional medicine could provide it... I'm pretty sure Jim's wife doesn't accept insurance for free acupuncture anyways ;)

Nope. Free is free.

The owner Denise works for goes to Bejing every few months and works with surgeons in lieu of anethesiologists. He just got back from doing stomach surgery where he just used acupuncture needles. Patient was fully conscious and awake, while the surgeons opened him up. The needles acted like a spinal tap. That is incredible.

You can't refute a practice that's been around for centuries.

That is truly amazing!

After see the narcotic cocktail they put my daughter on to perform her spinal fusion, it would have been cool to see it done more naturally.

Great, now I sound like I'm from Boulder (hate that place), but I'm still a Republican. :shhh:

Re: The Colorado BS thread

I had a fusion in my knec in 1974, disk was cracked and nerve picched ,, about a week in traction befor surgery and lots of percodine , after surgery everything is fine and no problems , but i do not believe in chinese vodoo .

Re: The Colorado BS thread

I wanted to try acupuncture a while ago but my insurance doesn't cover it and, to be honest, after being encouraged to go to a chiropractor and seeing no improvement and then again for PT and seeing no improvement, I'm skeptical to do anything but see this specialist. I don't expect anyone (even the Dalai Lama himself to be able to make this kind of pain go away in just one or two visits.

It also sucks because my wife is anti-drug and so she gets on my case if I drink a beer with a pain killer (and I know she is just looking out for me and I really do appreciate it). However, she wants me to take 5 Tylenol at a time but has no clue about how much this hurts and that if the pain meds I am on (and doubling up on) aren't doing anything then neither will 5 Tylenol or even 10 for that matter. So frustrating.

Re: The Colorado BS thread

go for the ap that there is alien tech !! :D

Re: The Colorado BS thread

do NOT take that many tylenol -- if you want to hop up on OTC do it with ibuprofen. the number one cause of liver failure is tylenol OD, it is wicked stuff on the liver beyond 500mg. Believe me, as a mega-skeptic being an insurance adjuster (former), I did not believe there could possibly be any benefit to acupuncture -- I have yet to shed my distrust of DC's, but I've seen the results with acupuncture. I am fairly certain at the end of the day you're going to end up under the knife, but if you can have less pain and a better quality of life through a few minutes with a few needles, really, what have you got to lose.

To quote Joliet Jake -- it don't cost nothin.

Re: The Colorado BS thread

IMHO, you need better drugs. A muscle relaxer, and something that maybe works on unexplained pain is not sufficient. Don't be afraid of the opiates, if you are truly in pain, they do help, and they don't get you high or addicted. My friends wife has a morphine pump implanted in her back, it works and was the only solution.

The Colorado BS thread

Diazepam, Vicodin, and JD mixed together make for some awesome dreams. I'm just saying. :D

Re: The Colorado BS thread

Damn River, research your options!

Re: The Colorado BS thread

I honestly didn't think my PC doc was going to give me any drugs at all to make things easier until I got into the Orthopedic Surgeon. I dealt with the pain for 2 days before calling him at 8:30 in the morning. I didn't get the script until about 4:00.

I have researched my options. Even if it is a herniated disc, they would have likely tried PT, Chiro, and shots before any surgery. Whatta ya mean Hypoid?
